Greek Life: Just for Show – Greek life has had a fairly negative impact on all the people I have known that have joined a fraternity or sorority. It interferes with school work and new pledges become all-consumed by their new "family." Service fraternities or sororities do not seem to be quite as bad. Going to the parties are fun for those who do not have to clean up the aftermath.

Local Atmosphere: Friendly Greenville – The atmosphere of Greenville, NC is without a doubt owing to the students at East Carolina University. Anywhere you go, whether on campus or off, you will meet smiling faces ready to welcome you on their next adventures. There's an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and bars/clubs downtown, and if the nightlife isn't your scene, there's a ton of outdoor activities.

Weather: The weather is mostly warm with scattered chances of rain

Weather: The weather is similar to weather evetrywhere in NC, and it doesn't affect me at all.

Facilities: My Initial Take: the Main Campus – Everything associated with the facilities and faculty/staff are presented decently, orderly and tidey.

3 College Senior

Athletics: The Teams Are Not That Great Overall - but Fan Support Is Pretty High – ECU doesn't have the best teams in basketball or football, although their baseball team is quite good.

5 College Senior

Computers: They Are Top Notch – They are pretty top notch. They majority of them have the latest operating systems on them and you also have a choice between mac or pc (although there are not as many macs available as pcs).

Campus Housing: The Dorms Are a Great Way to Meet Others – The dorm life is not too bad - it is a great way to meet others but living in an apartment off campus has its perks as well!

Computers: Several Labs – The computer labs at ECU are very high tech and are rarely crowded. The library is especially accessible and offers the best computers and printing abilities.

Parking: There are several areas to park on campus. There are several lots for parking for paid permits and also several areas for free parking (metered spots, etc.). Also, after 6PM anyone can park in the permit areas. There is a huge lot for the library and the fitness area.

Overall Experience: East Carolina University sometimes gets a bad reputation as a party school. I was a student athlete and involved in several organizations and clubs. I received a solid education and would push for my own children to attend my alma mater. I never partied at ECU and I also attended other schools such as UNC-Chapel Hill and I would classify UNC as a much larger party school than ECU. I highly rate the academics at ECU.

Majors: Health Fitness Specialist – Getting in the Health Fitness major is relatively easy, it requires a min GPA of 2.0 which is not hard to maintain and to pass a Fitness test. After pasing the test you only have to declare the major and that is as simple as talking to the advisor and making sure you have taken the right classes and have enough credits.

Parking: Only staff can park on campus. The freshman parking lot was downtown, unsupervised. There aren't enough parking meters.

5 College Senior

Nightlife: Lots of Fun – There is plenty to do nightlife-wise because the downtown area is only a block away from the campus and various dorms. Thankfully, in NC you do not have to be 21 to enter the bar, so whether you are old enough to drink or not you can still go with your friends to one of the clubs downtown. There are specials every night and a lot of bars throw certain themed parties or have live music, occasionally celebrity appearances. This past year I met The New Boys at the Rehab Lounge downtown. It always a lot of fun and there are plenty of police on patrol around town and in the streets to keep everyone safe.

5 College Senior

Diversity: Very Diverse – I have seen people of all shapes and sizes from various ethnicities, races, economic backgrounds, politcal beliefs, religious backgrounds and sexual orientations. Pirates are diverse and they are proud. There are people from all walks of life here and I've never witnessed or read about in our school paper, anyone discriminating against one another.

Parking: There is plenty of parking, but there are also expensive fees for parking permits year round. There is a lot of meter parking available if you do not have a pass, which is good, but make sure you try to arrive 30 minutes ahead of schedule in case you have to park a ways from your building. Also, there is a bus system at our school that transports students, like myself, to and from school every half an hour back to their apartment complexes.

Academics: Medical Leads the Way – ECU is famous for a variety of programs, the one that interested myself was journalism. ECU offers a great communications program, but the nursing school is the biggest in our state. All of greenville shouldbe conisdered college campus, and it helps that Greenville Hosipital and the medical program work hand in hand. The program is hard to get into but with its own seperate campus and library its worth it.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Being a journalism major has its perks, you work closely to proffesional writers from all feilds, and gain experience through them. The communications building is located next door to the library making it an easy and fast resource. My advisor helped me put together my schedule based on my major and what would help me in my journey. Also I receive an exclusive email letter each month with resources and job offers for students of the communication program.

Scholarships: Work Hard, Get Paid Harder – It was easy, hassle free and didnt take too much time to complete the application. The reimbursement process was just as easy with my refund being put directly on a personal visa provided by the school. I could keep track with everything electronically which made me feel more comfortable about what, who, when, and where.

4 College Junior

Guys & Girls: There are a lot of guys at ECU, most of them are really nice and some of them are really attractive.. you'll notice when you walk into ECU's gym.

4 College Senior

Off-Campus Dining: More Than Enough – Greenville is filled with restaurants. Have a very large variety. Always a new one being open.

4 College Senior

Weather: Love It or Hate It! It can get really cold or it can get really hot! Overall great weather.

4 College Senior

Health & Safety: Even though there have been incidents where there been crime problems the security makes you feel safe the way they handle situations.

3 College Senior

Weather: Rains a lot, but it is beautiful in the spring and summer. Lots of pool days :)

5 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: Tons of Places With Great Affordability – Tons of places with great affordability around Greenville. Of course you get what you pay for...but there are some very nice student living complexes.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
