3 College Freshman

Scholarships: Graduating with a 3.8 GPA, having a considerably high amount of community service hours, extracurricular activities, etc. I qualified for ZERO scholarships as an entering freshman

Health & Safety: ECU has a great alert system which sends a text and email to students when an assault is made on or (if off) near campus. Though, getting those emails seemed somewhat often for a short amount of time.

3 College Senior

Guys & Girls: They're okay, if you're into the Greek/average typical boring white middle class American look.

Facilities: It's Okay I Guess – There is not much to do at ECU or Greenville if you do not like to party. It's a typical small town. It's boring here. There aren't many interesting campus clubs, but there is a movie theater and bowling alley on campus. The dining halls are not very good. There are other options for meals, though, so that is good.

Majors: It is okay I guess. I am having difficulty finding the electives I want and need during the spring and fall semesters. They seem to be offered during the summer. There's no real application process for this major, you just need a 3.0 in sociology classes to stay in it.

2 College Senior

Diversity: There is representation from pretty much all races, but like in high school, likes stick to likes and I see mostly white people from middle to upper class walking around when I go to class. People from all walks of life go to ECU, you just have to look for them. Greek life is also homogenous.

3 College Senior

Majors: They have the same majors you'd find anywhere else in public NC universities. They have good education programs, a good business school, and plenty of allied health majors and pre-med students.

Campus Housing: I loved living on campus my freshmen yr. It really helped me meet new people and make new friends. Also the dorms had so many bonding events just for the people in the dorm to really get a chance to get to know each other. The convenience was also great because I lived right across from the dining hall and right next to the Galley which is another food spot. Also it only took 5 mins to walk to class!

Campus Housing: Dorm life is great for your first year. Students are close to campus and students get to meet many different people. Dorms are not the cleanest but you will to appreciate the little things in life when you go home, like not wearing shower shoes.

3 College Freshman

Transportation: ECU offers buses to take students to different parts of campus and other various places in Greenville. If a student lives off campus, ECU has buses that can take the student to and from campus. However I do feel it is still necessary to have a car. Greenville is a small town so at one point you will feel the need to get away for a while. Also there are places you are going to want to go to but will need a car for.

Diversity: ECU has a diverse mixture of peoples of all different races, political beliefs, and sexual orientation.

Athletics: The students are enthusiastic about the different sports on campus, but ECU is not part of a major conference and does not participate in the NCAA.

Majors: As an clinical laboratory science major I believe East Carolina will provide anybody with a quality education. East Carolina is full of spirit everywhere you go.

Computers: They are really good and convieniet. I like that they are touch screen.

Majors: It's fun, but it's hard work. If you're not willing to study then don't go into the nursing field.

Athletics: Athletics at East Carolina University are huge. Campus is empty on football game days because everyone is at the game, whether it is cold and pouring rain, or we're having a heat wave. I've really enjoyed the gym and swimming pool. They have a gym entirely for non-athletes so that we don't have to leave for the varsity teams to use the facilities.

Computers: There are plenty of computer labs and except for Joyner Library, everywhere on campus has free printing. There are definitely busy times in a school day or towards finals, but I've never had difficulty getting a computer or printing. There is wifi everywhere on campus and I haven't had problems with connecting to the network.

Campus Strictness: The dorms are loud and not conducive to studying even in the honors dorm. There is plenty of underage drinking and not very much punishment for it. I don't know of anyone who has lost scholarship for drinking and other illegal activity even when it would be merited.

Scholarships: I received academic scholarship and the program through the Honors College has been very helpful to me. I have a network of support through the Honors College with professors who are eager to help me. I did have difficulty with the initial paper with admissions; they would tell me they had my paperwork and then they would lose it in the shuffle.

3 College Junior

Majors: The program was rigorous to get into but it is to be expected when your entering a professional program. Challenges were passing the science classes that are required for this program but I see now how important it was to take them. This program, to me, is well worth it in the end. Clinical Laboratory Science is a good field to get into if you love science and you want to work in the health field, but not have the patient contact you would in any of the other medical fields. We work in the lab that processes blood samples, urine samples, and any types of samples really from the body. The workload isn't easy but its not supposed to be, especially if your dealing with a patient's life on the line.

Campus Housing: The dorms I lived in were fairly new and clean but I also lived in a dorm that wasn't my ideal choice. Some dorms are loud and the RA's really don't do anything about it. The food on campus is awesome, I just wish we had a Taco Bell.

Local Atmosphere: The town is a great supporter of the ECU Pirates and I love the way the town supports its school. The environment is great and a lot of places to eat stay open past normal hours because they know that students are out and about. There's stuff to do in the downtown area as well as the town itself.

Campus Dining: The choices of food are somewhat limited but the quality of the food is good.

4 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I am a commuter to school each day so I don't have any experience with safety issues at night. During the day, the campus is very safe and the campus security is readily available if needed.

Campus Strictness: The strictness is not too bad. Sometimes it seems ridiculous tho!

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
