3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: The university is very strict about their academic probation policy. You have one semester to redeem yourself, but after that, you're out. The campus police are tolerant of drinking to an extent, unless you're causing a disturbance. The officers never try to bust someone for no reason. It's also easy to drink in the dorms, as long as you're careful not to draw attention to what you're doing. Occasionally, the school is having to kick someone out for drug possession, but you're usually only put on probation for underage drinking.

Campus Housing: The dorms at East Carolina University can be very loud at night time, despite the "quite time" rules implemented by the RAs. Most of the rooms are of good size, considering they are dorms. Student athletes usually live in the College Hill neighborhood. Many students prefer to live in Central Campus because that's where the oldest dorms are. The West End neighborhood is convenient if you are interested in the social atmosphere downtown. In my experience, all the dorms have been clean and safe.

Computers: Many of the computers in the labs at East Carolina University are dependable. Each lab offers PCs and Macs, plus unlimited free printing. The WiFi in the labs, and around campus in general, is also dependable. There is always a computer available for students somewhere on campus, whether it's in one of the labs in the classroom buildings, in the library, or in one of the labs in the residence halls. There are also a few individual printing stations around campus where students can upload their work to an online database and retrieve it at one of the machines. The only time an issue arises is if one of the computers freeze up and has to be shut off, which may cause you to lose what you're working on.

Athletics: There is alot of school spirit and we have nice facilties but the actual sports teams arent the greatest

3 College Senior

Facilities: Great school spirit, always purple and gold walking around

3 College Senior

Facilities: Right off a busy road in a city so aesthetics arent the best

Athletics: Football is a big deal. People get dressed in purple and gold and come out and tailgate. It is a huge part of the experience.

Academics: There teachers were talented and had a lot of great information to share, regarding psychology, but there weren't internships. It was just lecture and tests.

4 Recent Alumnus

Academics: The course load isn't too bad depending on your major. You generally just need to go to class and you will get all the information you need. The science majors require a lot of studying.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: People make East Carolina out to be the biggest "party" school ever. However, you can find this anywhere if you're looking for it. Many people smoke and may drink but I don't see it as a big problem.

4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: There aren't many things to do in Greenville in the day time unless you get connected with clubs or sororities. However at night there is tons of things to do downtown.

5 College Freshman

Academics: I am a double major for geology and mathematics. The geology department is FABULOUS! The teachers are amazing and the students are amazing. The department head in particular is very helpful and friendly. The geology department feels like home to me at ECU. Also, there is a lot of opportunity for personal growth and aid in the geology department in my experience. The math department at ECU's faculty is not as welcoming and open in general as the geology department, however, the students are great and very helpful to one another.

Computers: I do not use the computer labs much because I have a personal computer, but I do know when I have used them I have had no trouble getting a computer. I think the trick to the computer labs on campus is knowing which ones are not as popular or regularly used by students. Once you find one that is relatively usually deserted, then you can almost guarantee access to a computer.

Facilities: ECU promotes student involvement through various organizations on campus such as Student Government, Student Ministries, and many other organizations. ECU also does well to advertise these organizations and make events on campus well known. The social scene at ECU is vibrant, with downtown within walking distance of campus as well as most of the fraternity and sorority houses. Greek life is emphasized but not the complete center of the social scene. It is very easy to get involved in groups/activities on campus and there is something for everyone.

Parking: The ECU police are very good at giving parking tickets and are readily willing to do so. The parking on campus is very limited, and the permits for on-campus parking are ridiculously expensive. On the weekends it is permitted to park anywhere on campus for free; however, during the week this is not so. Depending upon where you park, you can only park either after 4:00pm or after 7:00pm and your vehicle must be gone by 7:00am the next day. The parking off campus that is close to campus is always full and you have to pay. The price is not so bad, but in certain places you can only park for up to 2 hours at a time. Designated off campus parking that you can buy a yearly permit for requires busing to and from campus. However, the bus system is very reliable, making that form of parking not terribly bad. Overall, the parking could be better.

Facilities: The student life on campus is very vibrant. The buildings on campus are in good shape and some facilities are new. The Student Recreation Center (gym) is awesome. The campus is beautiful and easy to navigate. The food on campus is versatile in certain ways, but does get old from time-to-time. It would be nice if the campus had more green areas and trails around the area to walk through or study in during the day.

Off-Campus Dining: ECU is surrounded by restaurants from fine dining to fast food. Drinks are generally cheap, you can find anything you could possibly want. Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian....etc..

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: A lot of incidences happen off campus, after dark. So as long as you're in a group of about 3-4 you'll be fine. I feel safe on campus, generally.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: The guys range from cute to not so cute, in shape to not in shape, jerks to complete gentlemen. The girls are mostly cute. Most of the lazy girls wear yoga pants and uggs year round. Girls who like to look nice, (hair, make-up, pumps) are around also. Camo is really big, a lot of the country boys/girls wear camo everything.

4 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: ECU is a big school so there are all sorts of characters. Frat guy and Sorority girls are a big Majority and almost everyone one on campus goes to the Recreational center, so everyone is fit.

3 College Freshman

Scholarships: The school really helps get you what you need and fast! I wont give it an A because the filing out of forms can lead to big mix-ups in their documents.

2 College Freshman

Parking: The parking is adequate because so many people fill up the spaces quick. And the fact that you have to pay more for a certain permit to park closer to wherever you need to be is a little ridiculous.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I have never been in any danger since I have been here. Just to avoid petty theft and other inconveniences the security on campus is pretty mobile and I never feel at risk but there is always that slight chance. The cops are very lenient here when it comes to things but other than that I am satisfied.

4 College Sophomore

Majors: I am very happy with the nursing program. As a freshman, you are given a schedule with all the classes you will need to take in order to apply to nursing school

4 College Sophomore

Majors: Nursing is a very difficult and time consuming major, but you meet some amazing people and the teachers really do try and help you as best as they can.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
