Academics: Depending on the professor and class, workload can be medium to heavy. This isn't an easy major by any means, but it is very rewarding.

Academics: like the major I'm in. We aren't overloaded with school work most of the time and the curriculum is very interesting.

Campus Housing: Have an open mind, join as many on campus clubs and activities as you can. Becoming a pirate is a process! After you experience your first ECU football game you will officially bleed purple and gold. Being friendly in the dorms is a must-being social in college is almost just as important as that 4.0.

Off-Campus Housing: I live on campus, so I wouldn't really know.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: My overall experience is okay. I haven't encountered anything that made it super great or super bad.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: There are a ton of different religions and cultures on campus. There are different clubs for each.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There are some restaurants and tons of fast food chains around. There are a lot of options.

3 College Sophomore

Greek Life: I don't really know anything about Greek Life.

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: There are some places to go off of campus, but there could be more.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: The good thing is that there is a lot of room. The only downside is that the bathrooms get dirty very easily.

1 College Sophomore

Scholarships: The process of finding out how much money I've been awarded takes too long.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: Dining halls aren't very good, but at least there is Subway and Panda Express

Greek Life: Maybe my answer is biased because I am not a fan of Greek life. I do not have experience with Greeks on other campuses but the Greeks here love to segregate themselves from everyone to feel extra special. In my experience more than half of the Greeks, both men and women, are very snobby and do not like to associate with non Greeks. There are a handful of Greeks that I am friends with but many of those students are involved in much less serious Greek organizations.

Campus Housing: Living on campus was the best part of college. I am glad to have moved out of that tight little dorm but I wouldn't trade it for the world. 80% of the people I still know today, I met through campus living. The campus living staff has also been a huge part of my life. I made so many connections through the dorm staff.

Off-Campus Dining: Off-campus food in this town is the best! There are so many one of a kind places and many places that offer student discounts. The cost is pretty average, although a handful of places are surprisingly cheap for the quality. The best random place to eat in this town in RJs, they have southern style BBQ and collard greens. I also love campus calzones and a great sushi option is Japan Inn, they have great student discounts and offers.

Campus Dining: The choices around campus are very unique, such as the chinese food place, the calzones at the pizza place and the taco bowl. Having a chilies on campus is also a beautiful way to burn up some pirate bucks. Todd dining hall has some pretty great food but my only complaint is that none of the food locations around campus offer a healthy option as a pirate meal. All the pirate meals are things like pizza and burgers, never wraps and salads. That is a little annoying but other than that I love the food choices.

Campus Strictness: ECU is good at worrying about the correct things other than when it comes to alcohol use being too big of a focus instead of other crime issues in the surrounding Greenville area.

3 College Senior

Scholarships: I'm not sure that the situation for this topic is great at any university. At ECU you can get what you need, but some the staff at the finical aid office can be quite rude.

Local Atmosphere: A lot of students are quick to say Greenville is a bad environment. If students gave Greenville a chance off-campus they would find that there is actually some pretty cool places. We are basically the restaurant capitol of North Carolina, and there are many one of a kind places to eat. Other than food and drinks, on campus is probably your best bet if you want to have some recreational fun.

4 College Senior

Health & Safety: ECU tries their very best to ensure safety on campus but there is only so much they can do with the crime rates in Greenville off-campus. One thing I think would really help is if the ECU police left ALE to the alcohol problems with the students and focused on the crime surrounding campus in Greenville.

Athletics: I love watching the sports as a student but, having been an employee to the athletic department, there is a lot that needs to be done. From the outside everything looks like sunshine, but from within, I am bothered by the expectations of the student athletes. For some athletes in sports that get overshadowed such as swimming and tennis, the students are expected to do way too much academically while also given little time to pursue their academic needs. Meanwhile, sports such as football and basketball, the students are baby-ed way too much and really need their priorities set straight.

Facilities: Some professors are extremely helpful outside the classroom. I have spoken with friends from other universities and they rarely if ever have the same experiences as I do with my professors here. I have had quite a few professors who will go out of their way to help me understand a topic. or help me with the department head to assist me with my major. Many professors at my university have social groups and clubs that they advertise in class. For example, my professor for my elective course on religion had a club he was telling us about. I was not interested myself, but it was nice to know that he was trying to get more students aware of his club.

3 College Senior

Facilities: I love the athletic centers and the student center and especially the library. My only problem is the green spaces, ECU could really use to add more environmentally friendly additions. Such as recycled paper goods, and more recycling bins around campus for bottles and plastic.

4 College Senior

Guys & Girls: The greek life is a little annoying, I know that is probably true with any school. Other than the greek subculture there is so much diversity it's hard to pin-point a direct description. I guess if I had to describe everyone else, it would be that they dress relaxed, they have big social lives and are interested in many things ranging from sports to music.

5 College Senior

Overall Experience: ECU has its quirks like any other subculture but I love it more than anything in this world. I am proud to say I am a pirate!

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
