Campus Housing: The buildings are old so there are bugs, other than that they're pretty clean. The housing process flows smoothly and the cost isn't too high. Living on campus is great for the social environment.

Guys & Girls: There are so many students on this campus that you meet new people everyday. The students come in all shapes and sizes, which is nice. It's easy to meet people who are into the same stuff that you are by just attending a campus function. Most students dress pretty well when they are in a social setting. There are a lot of attractive guys on campus and relationships are easy to maintain.

Scholarships: The process takes a while, so you have to do it early. This can be difficult sine EVERY scholarship and grant relies on the FAFSA report, which can only be filled out after your family does their taxes for the year. It would be nice to see a change and have scholarships available year round. Financial aid is also limited due to the state of the economy, which is understandable, but there are a lot of students who do not qualify for financial aid that can't afford their tuition and end up taking out massive loans for school, which is not ideal for young adults in this economy.

Majors: There are so many degree programs offered by East Carolina, and they are expanding as we speak. The academic advisers are great to work with and students can change their majors and stay on track for a four year graduation plan.

College Freshman

Majors: I do not currently participate in internships.

Local Atmosphere: Greenville is a city built around a university. Without ECU, Greenville would be nothing. It's not the safest city, the crime rates are pretty high, which is scary to college students. There are a lot of places to eat, but not a lot to actually do off campus. The shopping is limited to the mall and a few strips around town, but nothing to rave about. Sports are all university related. Locals love the students! They support the university and student business around town.

3 College Freshman

Greek Life: I think it's great for those that are interested. Greek life gets people involved in university activities and helps people make new friends. It helps keep up the gpa of the university. Some fraternities/sororities have different images and reputations around campus.

Weather: This is North Carolina! Love it or hate it, you can't change the weather. I embrace it and dress accordingly. Those that complain about the weather on campus are not dressed for it or are just doing so for attention. If you check the weather channel or look out the window before you leave for class, you're usually good.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: It depends on the officer. It depends on the day.

4 College Freshman

Diversity: This campus is very diverse and I love it! A majority of the students are accepting of each other and remain openminded to sexual orientation, religion, etc.

3 College Freshman

Computers: I strongly recommend having your own computer. The locations of computer labs are not ideal for all students to access at all times.

4 College Freshman

Athletics: Football and men's basketball are very popular, but not a lot of other varsity sports are raved about by the student body in general. The football and basketball facilities are also the best of the sports facilities on campus. School spirit is like no other at ECU, all the students get involved and excited when we play. It seems no matter how good/bad our teams play, pirate nation has their backs!

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: There are several downtown locations to go to, but only a couple that anyone bothers attending. Many students can get in on"college nights" at clubs for no cover, usually a Thursday or other weeknight. Parties are EVERYWHERE. There is a lot of drinking, and the authorities don't tend to get involved unless the party gets too big or there are too many people hanging out outside. Underage students go out too, they go to the clubs and parties and participate in drinking according to what their peers are doing without thinking twice about it. Authorities rarely get involved. Many student walk to parties in groups and can even walk downtown from campus dorms, so transportation is rarely an issue.

3 College Freshman

Drug Safety: There are many obvious sources of drugs around campus, but unless campus police need to get involved, they tend to look the other way on most occasions. When health or safety concerns are involved I have seen policies carried out, but if no one is complaining, the authorities don't seem to mind.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: There are safety resources available, but not a lot of students use them or take them seriously. Campus police are visible around campus constantly.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: Many girls on campus are very attractive and some of the guys are. However, a lot of the guys I have come to meet are very arrogant and self-absorbed.

3 College Freshman

Parking: Parking is very expensive and a lot of the parking is not close to any of the classes.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: The administration is not too strict about anything. They do kick students out for drug use and such but they mostly just give you a warning.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
