Nightlife: Downtown needs more clubs than just stilllife

Academics: It really depends on your professor

Campus Strictness: ECU is pretty laid back, except when it comes to parking

Greek Life: lots of greek life, more parties

Weather: even though it rains a lot, I feel like the weather is good for the most part

Computers: The speed is very good, but it's a disappointment when professors don't allow computers

Off-Campus Dining: The off campus dining options are not very diverse...or healthy

Local Atmosphere: There are things to do, but parts of Greenville are not safe

Nightlife: I don't go out much

Off-Campus Dining: Wonderful if you're tired of campus food

Campus Housing: I do not live on campus

2 College Sophomore

Scholarships: They do anything to keep their money.

3 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: When it's bad, it's really bad. That doesn't usually happen much.

4 College Sophomore

Diversity: There is a good mixture of everything on ECU campus

Transportation: The shuttles to and from campus are great. Up to date, usually on time, and the routes are easy to follow. The only con I have is since I have to live off campus without a car, I wish more transportation came to my apartment complex on the weekends so I am not stranded, or have to pay constantly for taxis.

Health & Safety: ECU has one of the biggest health education programs in the nation. They make sure you are informed about all campus resources, especially the campus police. There are safety phones installed all over campus, and the campus has escorts, and a Safe-Ride system, and also a late-night bus. Greenville has been notorious for its crime rate, but I have always felt safe.

Diversity: The diversity could be better. There are a lot of people with similar backgrounds and interests, and if you are new to the school, or an outsider, at times it can be hard to find a place to fit in. Like all schools, ECU has its cliques, so you are either one thing, or another.

5 College Junior

Athletics: ECU is nationally known for its sports, mainly its football team! There is a huge enthusiasm and school spirit at ECU.

4 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Greenville isn't a large city, but there are things to do. Clubs downtown, lots of restaurants, and shopping- if you know how to use your resources you will enjoy yourself. There is a lot of concern for safety, but if you are smart, hang around the right people, you shouldn't find yourself in trouble.

College Junior

Campus Housing: This year, ECU had more students than housing openings available, so as a transfer student I had to be placed in off campus housing. The housing process was a pain. Working out the details took months, and the staff kept changing everything up, and even switched my room assignment last minute.

3 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: There are too many fast food chains in Greenville.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Parking without a pass is a pain.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
