3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: The administration is not too strict about anything. They do kick students out for drug use and such but they mostly just give you a warning.

Overall Experience: East Carolina is a very fun and vibrant college with lots to offer. Sports are huge at this school and everyone attends football games. ECU is very welcoming and loves to make it's students feel wanted.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: Off-campus dining is decent in greeneville. Just enough options to satisfy the needs of students.

4 College Freshman

Campus Housing: Campus housing is not a big issue here and the college is constantly remodeling and improving facilities.

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: Nightlife at East Carolina is awesome! There are many clubs and bars very close to campus that are lots of fun.

3 College Freshman

Weather: The weather is usually pretty decent but it does tend to rain a bunch.

3 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: The city that surrounds East Carolina does not offer very much after graduation. The city of Greenville is centered around East Carolina and is very dedicated to this college.

3 College Freshman

Computers: There are many opportunities on campus to find and use a computer if you do not have one. However, I would recommend having your own because of the demand.

5 College Freshman

Athletics: School pride at East Caroline is always very obvious.

3 College Freshman

Health & Safety: I feel safe while on campus but the areas surrounding campus can be pretty rough.

2 College Freshman

Drug Safety: Alcohol is very big at this school and it is very obvious.

5 College Freshman

Facilities: Campus life is great at ECU because there are many opportunities to better yourself as well as have fun. A gym, wellness center, and various dining facilities make it possible to lead a healthy life.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: East Carolina is a very proud and spirited university which is what makes it unique.

Scholarships: Sometimes you will have to tug, pull, and make emails in advance to receive grants, loans, or scholarships for which you may qualify, but generally it is based off of your FAFSA and the rest is handled by the FA office.

Greek Life: Very dedicated Greek life with fraternity and sorority houses available.

Nightlife: Nightlife is pretty great, sometimes wild. Be careful and NEVER accept drinks offered by strangers!!

Campus Housing: You have to live with another roommate and the cost of living on campus compared to off campus is more expensive, but it is more convenient in that you have access to everything right there and you won't be necessary to own a vehicle.

Academics: In my program, Hispanic Studies, the workload is rigorous and teachers do not recognize talent. "Talent" is based off of academic performance, grades, and GPA, when in reality it should be based off of potential. Some students in my program earn good grades in their Spanish classes, but do not express a commitment to wanting to learn Spanish/be bilingual, nor are they experienced writers/speakers in the target language because teachers only weigh a small percentage on grammar, pronunciation, conversation and the practical part of the learning a second language. For example, with advisory approval and study abroad experience, a 1001-1004 level or Spanish minor may be able to take 3000+ level class with students who are way more advanced. This is difficult because the teacher has to grade each student according to their level, so their are discrepancies with the grading system/gpa/academic performance system because it doesn't take into account "potential" or actual "skill," only numbers.

This may vary with different departments.

Academics: A wide range of academic programs offered at ECU! The majority of the professors seem intelligent, approachable, and student-friendly. However, some professor can be a little immature and there are some you don't want to cross, or they will treat you so unprofessionally. Paul Fallon.

Guys & Girls: Guys and girls at ECU are typical, young adults who are experiencing college and being away from home for the first time. Therefore, expect anything to happen out of the situations you put yourself in and the people you choose to be around because these things will ultimately define your social standing. As a result, some people are more into the books, more into drinking, or less into studying, and more into skipping class, etc. It's all a variety.

3 College Senior

Campus Dining: Campus Dining is okay and convenient, but the services could be better and prices be lowered on some of the costs.

College Senior

Drug Safety: The drug/alcohol policy enforcement at ECU is very strict. You can get placed on academic suspension and/or kicked off campus for up to a year just for a single penalty (ex. DUI, Drug Charge).

4 College Senior

Facilities: Students are very high-spirited and involved with the campus.

4 College Senior

Facilities: Very active and engaged campus life.

3 College Senior

Weather: Sometimes the weather can interfere with wanting to go to class, especially for commuter and off-campus students. And given that parking is hectic, and you need a parking permit to park close to campus for your classes, sometimes you are subject to riding the bus, even if it is an early morning or late night class.

The quality and enthusiasm of the professors who care about their students is what attracts and retains students who could have gone to larger and more prestigious schools. Greenville is quite charming and has such good local food that most skeptics love the area, or at least ECU, by the time they graduate. Although the campus police are friendly, ECU is quite strict, perhaps in an effort to downplay the “party school” reputation. The strictness, however, contributes to student safety and helps reduce the drug presence on campus. Alcohol is a problem for some students, and the clubs are tempting, but the counseling center can help students with their problems. ECU’s computer resources are excellent, and the athletic facilities are better than the teams’ records. ECU’s most enjoyable facilities are the green areas, especially because the weather here is so pleasant—crazy, but pleasant.

Whether living on or off campus, students should join organizations to maximize their college involvement and build leadership experience for their resume. With ECU’s diverse student population, new students can easily find an organization, Greek or non-Greek, that is for them. ECU is reputed to have one of the highest concentrations of pretty girls anywhere, and the guys are good-looking overall, too. The Southern hospitality creates a welcoming social atmosphere. ECU has been through sports losses and administrative shake-ups in the past, but some of the political damage seems to be getting straightened out. So, as usual, ECU students are optimistic. They will continue to be easy-going, yet serious and balanced, fun-loving learners.
