Facts & Statistics

Tips for Getting In
  • Be genuine in your Duke supplemental essays! Research the school and show them that you really do want to come.
  • Have a serious commitment to community service. In the same vein, show Duke that you really have a passion for one of your extracurriculars.
  • If it's really your top choice, apply Early Decision.
  • The obvious: work hard!
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Duke is pretty much its own little world; except on weekends, you don't really see the outside on this enclosed campus.
  • Durham is really not a great college town-Chapel Hill, however, passes quite nicely and is a free bus ride away.
  • Just because the Marketplace is all-you-can-eat doesn't mean you should eat all you can.
  • Just how big Greek life is here
  • Parking can be very difficult.
  • Without air conditioning, the first and last few weeks will be a formative experience.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Interviews are conducted by alumni and are not mandatory. Information sessions are held daily, and a schedule can be found on the Duke Undergraduate Admissions Web site or by calling (919) 684-3214.
Campus Tours
Throughout the year, student-led walking tours of campus are offered. Tours typically last at least one hour and fifteen minutes, and no more than an hour and a half. All tours originate at the Admissions Office, which is located on West Campus. No appointment is necessary; however, if your group is larger than 20 people, contact Admissions in advance about the possibility of a group tour. Also, call ahead if you require accommodations for a physical disability or will require physical assistance during a tour of campus.
Overnight Visits
Admissions will arrange overnight hosting for high school seniors visiting Duke in the fall. With appropriate advance notice (two weeks or more), a Duke student will host a perspective high school student overnight. In April, admitted high school seniors, deciding whether or not to matriculate, can stay overnight during Blue Devil Days.
