4 College Junior

Facilities: The students at Denison are all very friendly and welcoming. The campus itself is constantly described as being "picture perfect," which I most definitely agree with. There are campus events for those who are not party-goers every weekend and traditions are always followed.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: Denison is the most aesthetically beautiful campus I visited during my college search. The campus has odd traditions and activities such as Naked Week, a week dedicated to promoting self-acceptance by running naked around campus in student lead groups. Besides having events like this, the administration encourages students to create a campus in which everyone is comfortable and proud of.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: Denison is a unique school in my biased opinion. Although it is quite small and located in an oddly-small town, it has a great group of students and faculty unlike any other campus. Denisonians are expected to have a great balance between intellectuality and social skills. This makes most students at Denison a unique specimen to examine.

Facilities: Student hangouts are limited to one building pretty much. The place looks nice at first but it gets old. Don't look too closely.

3 College Sophomore

Facilities: The dorms are old and gross, but the new athletics facility is awesome.

There is no doubt about it—Denison's campus is absolutely stunning. It is seated on top of a hill and overlooks Granville, with lots of trees whose leaves turn beautiful colors in the fall. In addition to the wonderful aesthetics, Denison has some beautiful red brick buildings and newly renovated facilities. Denison's campus also includes a biological reserve, which spans more than 300 acres! Additionally, Denison completed a $38.5 million renovation and expansion of the Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center in 2010, which includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Mitchell also includes a fitness center, with new workout equipment and a track. Almost all of the facilities at Denison are in great condition. How well Denison is maintained is one of the best parts about going to school here: the landscaping is always neat, all of the technology is up-to-date, and the facility managers are very talented and friendly. New computers were just added in the library, and there are plenty of places to work with all of the computer labs conveniently located around campus. The only complaint students seem to have is that the Wi-Fi on campus is sometimes spotty, but Denison is actively trying to help this problem. Slayter Student Union, although dubbed Denison's "ugliest" building, is nonetheless very practical and a great place to hang out. Slayter is home to the Slayter snack bar and The Roost, Denison's only bar on campus (they also have delicious ice cream!). The Bandersnatch coffeehouse on East Quad also has snacks and bands performing throughout the week. It is a great place to hang out, eat, enjoy a Nutella milkshake, or do homework.

School Slang
  • The Commons: The Campus Common behind Slayter Hall
  • Doane: Doane Administration Building
  • Shep: Shepardson Hall
  • Slayter: Slayter Hall, the student union
  • Sunnies: The former "Sunset Apartments," located on West Quad. They are now known as Brown, Pratt, Good, and Myers.
Traditions
  • Anchor Splash: Anchor Splash is a yearly event put on by Delta Gamma sorority. All of the fraternities and sororities compete in a week-long series of events culminating in a synchronized swimming competition.
  • Bluegrass Festival: Every February, the College hosts a bluegrass festival which features renowned performers as well as workshops and rehearsal experiences.
  • Culture Jam: Every year, a group of student organizations puts on a concert in the Mitchell Center. The concert features R&B music and is usually a pretty big hit with most students.
  • D-Day: D-Day is a concert Denison holds every year. Students can go for free and bring one or two guests for a reduced price. In the past, D-Day has featured Third Eye Blind and Wale and Jeremih, but the event often hosts local acts, as well.
  • KATs with Bats: Every year Kappa Alpha Theta holds a school-wide wiffleball tournament in the spring. Teams compete for prizes, and there is a huge barbecue on the IM fields! It is a great time!
  • Naked Week: Yes, there is a week at Denison where everyone runs around the campus naked every night. This week is dedicated to acknowledge eating disorder awareness. It has been described as a very liberating experience, and it is kind of fun to watch half of the campus run naked through your dorm.
  • Serenades: The serenades are another Greek tradition that draws plenty of non-Greek students out to East Quad. Fraternities and sororities will sing to each other in celebration of events like engagements.
Urban Legends
  • Beta House on North Quad is haunted.
  • The basement girls' bathroom in Curtis West is haunted.
  • The seventh floor of the library is haunted.
  • The Wingless Angels—a secret organization on campus that pulls pranks on the school.
Favorite Things To Do
There are lots of things to do on campus, especially at night. The student union is host to concerts, comedians, and plenty of activities put on by student organizations. Swasey Chapel and the Mitchell Center house the larger acts Denison brings to campus. For something more low-key, the Denison Film Society shows movies on several nights of the week. The plays at Ace Morgan Theatre generally draw large crowds, as well. There are also guest speakers almost every day of the week. Students never lack things to do. There is almost always something to do on campus. In between classes, students can grab a bite to eat and watch television in Slayter Hall or work out in the athletic center.
