I have complicated feelings about my time here. On one hand, COA can be really wonderful. There is freedom and flexibility to explore, which has led me to discover new interests I otherwise never would have, and the self-directed path has allowed me to grow immensely as a student and individual. However, there are deep institutional problems that are really hard to overlook. A major issue is that there is essentially NO student life. Advisors and peers are a better place to look to for support. Housing is a nightmare. There is no seniority β you will not be given first choice at housing if you are upperclassmen. The only people who are guaranteed housing are first years, who are required to live on campus. There is also an astounding lack of communication between administration and students. Overall, I like who I am here, but itβs not an easy place to be.
The professors and academics are amazing, and truly some of the best people you'll ever meet. There are also always things to do on/around campus with friends. Overall though, there is no help from the Student Life team or the Administration which makes it really hard to survive here. Sometimes I wish I didn't come here or that I transferred cause it's really hard to struggle all alone while you watch Student Life and the Administration give their little group of international students everything while everyone else is paid dirt. The way classes are run though are the best for neurodivergent students, but you have to put up with so much to last here.
The environment at COA is so warm and welcoming. In all my classes, I have been delighted to find that all my teachers are incredibly passionate about the topics that they teach about, and their main goal is to get students engaged. All my teachers, as well as the other staff that I have gotten to know, have been lovely people. Most of the courses I have taken have been incredibly interesting and engaging. The campus is so beautiful, the town is lovely, and it's so amazing living next to the ocean and Acadia National Park. The other experiences at the college have been amazing, including going out to an island to count gull nests, studying woodpeckers out in a school-owned section of a forest near by, and plenty of other wonderful opportunities.
