Facts & Statistics

Tips for Getting In
  • Emphasize and focus on your passions in your applications, and try to relate to how you think you can further them at Colgate.
  • One Dean of Admission recommends you write your essay and then have friends, teachers, and your parents read over it. If they couldn't hear your "voice," it still needs work.
  • Take on a rigorous course load during your high school years. The Office of Admission will never compare you with an applicant from another school, but they will evaluate your course selection and performance based on your school's course offerings.
  • While no one can say for certain what the deans of admission are looking for in a prospective class, Colgate students are generally very strong students who demonstrate dedication to their school, community, or family through service and extracurriculars.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Be open to making new friendships. A wide variety of people attends Colgate. You will probably never get to meet such a diverse group of people in your life other than at school.
  • College is a time to reevaluate everything you've been involved with until this point. Take advantage of the opportunities you've been given by getting involved as soon as you get on campus. There are more than 170 student organizations, and it is incredibly easy to start your own organization and get school funding.
  • Don't feel a need to take part in the party culture. While Colgate tends to be known as a "play hard, party hard" institution, there is far more going on here.
  • Take advantage of the Center for Career Services and the extensive alumni network; the student and professional staff are there to assist you from your first day on campus.
  • While you are not required to declare your major until the second semester of your sophomore year, the sooner you get involved with your major program, the more you will get out of it.
  • You need a good pair of boots and a warm jacket. On the bright side, the snow and longer winters do foster a strong sense of community.
Interviews & Information Sessions
The Office of Admission, located up the hill at James B. Colgate Hall, is open during the academic year Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Colgate also offers tours and information sessions on select Saturdays that include an information session with an admission officer, faculty member, and current student. Information sessions last approximately one hour. Registration is encouraged for all campus visits and can be done either online or by phone. While Colgate does not use interviews as part of the application process, informational interviews with current students are available from May of a student's junior year through December of his or her senior year. Contact the Office of Admission by phone at (315) 228-7401 or email at at least three weeks' notice to ensure availability.
Campus Tours
Three sets of student-led tours leave from the Office of Admission each day, Monday through Friday, at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Information sessions are offered twice daily at 9:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tours last approximately 75 minutes.
Overnight Visits
The Office of Admission offers high school seniors and prospective transfer students the option to stay with a Colgate student overnight. Visits are offered Sunday through Thursday, mid-September to mid-November and from February to early March. To schedule an overnight visit, contact the Office of Admission at (315) 228-7401 at least two weeks in advance.
