Greek Life: I think the fraternities died out in the `60s and `70s when everyone at Clark was a hippie and not into that sort of thing. The one shame I see with the lack of fraternities is we don't have any silly traditions or pranks like schools with fraternities have. I'm sure there are cliques which can center around frat-type activities, and I know we have theme housing, where you can live with people of similar interests, and a few of the sports teams take up the slack by living in poorly-kept apartments with loud parties.

Greek Life: We frown on Greek life, actually.

Niche User

Greek Life: I don't know why we don't have Greek life on campus, but I'm glad that we don't.

Niche User

Greek Life: That's what's great about Clark; there are no fraternities and sororities. It was great to know that hazing wouldn't be a problem.

Niche User

Greek Life: What the hell is Greek life? I can't really say I've experienced it, unless you're making an innuendo. The jocks are too weak a crew at this point, but I guess they're the best alternative to it.

Drug Safety: Like anywhere else, drugs are present on campus, but it doesn't seem to be a huge problem. I've never experienced peer pressure.

Niche User

Drug Safety: It's there. Most kids are recreational and social users, but in the past few years, two students have ODd on heroin. And, there are a lot of wealthy students here, so I know there's a fair bit of cocaine, as well. But, you can go through four years at Clark quite happily without even tasting a drop of alcohol and making friends who are pretty abstinent as well, so it's not like we're all stoned out of our heads all the time.

Niche User

Drug Safety: There is a drug scene on campus, but it is easy enough to avoid or engage in, depending on your preferences.

Niche User

Drug Safety: It exists, probably like any other school. If you want it, it's there for you. If you don't want it, it won't find you.

Niche User

Drug Safety: It's there, but as always, if you want it, it's there, and if you don't want it, it's not going to get pushed on you.

Niche User

Drug Safety: There's a lot of drinking, that's all I know.

Niche User

Drug Safety: Weed is there if you want it, but I don't know about anything harder.

Niche User

Drug Safety: I wasn't a part of it, but I know that some girl fatally ODd. If you're going to do it, be safe about it, and don't be stupid enough to get caught.

Niche User

Drug Safety: If you want hard drugs like heroin or meth, then you are either going to have to bring your own or venture out into the ghetto of Worcester to find it. And, if you are crazy enough to go asking around for drugs in Main South, then nothing can stop you from either finding what you want or dying. But, more realistically, if you want to drink and smoke, it's going to be there for you. If you want to trip, then you might have to wait for a very long time until someone's friend of a friend finds something. And if you want coke, well, it used to be hard to find, but it seems to be on the rise in recent years. But, then again, you will still need to search for it. If anyone does something at Clark, they don't tend to talk about it. Compared to a lot of places, and especially given the area that Clark is in, it might as well be considered drug-free.

Niche User

Drug Safety: There used to be more of a drug scene until a few years ago when two students overdosed on heroin within a month. That basically pulled the drug scene to a halt.

Niche User

Drug Safety: If you want it, you can find it, but you might have to ask around. If you want to avoid it, it's pretty easy to avoid everything except alcohol and weed, and it's possible to avoid those, too. One of my best friends stayed straight for all four years, and he was one of the most involved and well-known kids on campus.

Niche User

Drug Safety: The drug scene is great. I highly recommend it.

Niche User

Drug Safety: It's like any other campus. All college campuses have drugs.

Drug Safety: I honestly wouldn't know anything about that!

Niche User

Drug Safety: I can't comment. I'm still on parole.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: If you get caught drinking by the campus police, you will get written up. However, the campus police don't go door to door looking for people to write up.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: The campus police are Worcester cops, so they tend to have a tough attitude. Be careful, and you should be fine.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: The cops are out walking around campus at night and on duty to get any calls from neighbors, but aside from the parties they break up, they don't seem to be terribly concerned with babysitting the students. It's on everyone to act responsibly.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: Campus policy on drugs and alcohol is very lax. You would think that this would lead to disproportionately high amounts of drugs and drinking, but I feel that Clark is average, if not below average, for the amount of substance on campus.

Niche User

Campus Strictness: Residential Life and Housing is getting stricter about enforcing rules, as are the campus police, but people just end up going off campus to get around that.

The students say it best: Clark is a great place to spend four important—perhaps the most important—years of your life. Those who go to Clark report being glad they went. They say that they learned what they wanted to learn in their major, had a lot of fun, and grew up in the process. No campus is perfect, but despite Clark’s flaws, students still manage to fall in love with it and pursue their degrees until the end. Clark’s strengths lie in its academics, its community, and the city in which it resides. Even though that same city gives rise to some of Clark’s largest problems, it also exemplifies the diversity that Clark strives to provide for its students on campus. The city’s restaurants also provide a welcome escape from Clark’s dreadful meal plan!

Although Clark suffers from a poor social scene, low enthusiasm for organized sports, New England weather, and the double-edged sword of apathy and tolerance, Clarkies leave the school realizing that they have just lived through an incredible academic and social experience. It is an experience that stays with them throughout their lives via Clark’s professional reputation, as well as the bonds formed with professors and fellow Clarkies. Students agree: By the time graduation day rolls around, you will be equipped to face the world as an educated adult, but you will wish you had just a little more time at Clark.
