2 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Coming from a big city where I could travel, I feel trapped here. Without a car, there's nothing to do.

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: It's a small town. There really are not that many things to do, especially if you don't own a car. You have to go to Columbia or Charleston if you really want to do something.

3 College Junior

Local Atmosphere: Seems like a nice small city

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: Its a small town but when events come around the students are always interacting with each other.

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: Area attractions in this town are little to none. There really isn't anything to do in this city other than party and eat. Safety is sort of an issue for this city. There are sirens going off almost every other day, but overall it's about average. Shopping is poor in my opinion. Sports are pretty big in this city, well football is anyway at the school next door. The local attitude towards students are very even kill, some locals are proud and supportive while others really don't care at all.

The local atmosphere at Claflin and in the surrounding environment of Orangeburg is quite tranquil and relaxing. The University has maintained most of its historic buildings, which adds a Southern charm to the atmosphere for its students and visitors alike. The natural environment on its own is quite peaceful, but the students and locals bring the small town of Orangeburg to life. The town is very appreciative that it is home to two major universities in South Carolina—Claflin and South Carolina State University—and the locals love to meet and interact with the variety of college students here.

However, since Orangeburg is so small—the population is less than 15,000—there is not much activity in the town itself, and many students prefer to head off to bigger cities like Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Columbia where there are a variety of things for them to do. However, all students agree that Orangeburg is one of the best places to get away from the hustle and bustle of the real world. The town is calm, and there are no distractions to affect a student’s academic potential, which gives Claflin students a big advantage in their college careers.
