3 College Junior

Facilities: It's okay. After a certain time there is nowhere to hang out at, unless you have friends off campus.

3 College Senior

Facilities: Claflin University is a religiously private HBCU. We value scholarship, leadership and promote excellence in everything we do as a university, which sets us a part from other HBCU's. We are a family at Claflin and we work towards bettering ourselves academically and individually at our school.

3 College Senior

Facilities: I actually attend some of the campus activities, whenever I don't have too much work to do. I enjoy myself whenever I attend campus events.

2 College Junior

Facilities: Campus is rather dry. Not much to do around Orangeburg.

5 College Junior

Facilities: We see our president almost everyday and he knows us all by name. Simply amazing.

The quality of the academic facilities at Claflin is top-notch. The University invests a considerable amount of money to provide state-of-the-art scientific and technological equipment for its students and professors to use. Claflin recently added the Molecular Science and Research Center, which features state-of-the-art equipment, including the only Bruker BioSpin 700 Megahertz Ultrashield Plus at a South Carolina college. The building also has an atrium, multiple labs, offices, “Smart” classrooms, and study rooms. The University is planning on adding a forensics to the center, as well. Claflin’s library is three floors and has comfortable workstations and accessible computer stations on the second and third floors, and Bowen Hall provides a large area for students to study when they are not in class.

However, the University’s Student Center needs to be updated—it is quite small and lacks many features that other schools provide to their students. Plus, it closes too early in the evenings. As a result, there is not a lot to keep students entertained on campus during the day or night. The athletic facilities here are also lacking. Even though Claflin is a university, its gymnasium is comparable in size to a high school gym, and its location also causes some students to stay away. But the University does a good of working to maintain, restore, and modernize the existing facilities so they’re usable for future generations to come.

Clubs and Organizations on Campus
There are more than 30 clubs and organizations on campus, but very few are actually known by students, and most are completely unheard of. Some of the active clubs include: Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, American Chemical Society Club, Earth Science Club, Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, and the National Pre-Alumni Council of the United Negro College Fund. Getting into a club is easy-a membership fee is required at the beginning of the semester, and students need to attend the few meetings that are held. If students want to start a new club, they must complete a club registration form and submit it to the Student Center Office. However, most students are either too busy or not interested in starting new clubs on campus, much less getting involved in existing organizations.
