Ugly scars of industrialism aside, Buffalo's a pretty nice place to live. Everywhere you turn is an architecturally unique building with a history. It's technically a big city, but it sometimes seems more like a small town—the idea of "six degrees of separation" is more like "three" when you're from Buffalo. Canisius provides its students with Metro passes each year, which can transport you the length of the city. Buffalo is certainly student-friendly, and bringing your student ID (and Metro pass) wherever you go can benefit you with a host of discounts, from a nice dinner at Chef's to admission to the Buffalo Zoo.
Other colleges in the area include: the University of Buffalo or "UB," "Buff" State (Buffalo State College), Medaille College, Daemen College, D'Youville College, Bryant & Stratton College, Trocaire College, and Erie Community College. Buffalo is known more for its bars and abysmal sports legacies than crime, but it is not a wealthy city, and poverty does breed lawlessness. This is not particularly a huge concern on campus, but make sure to take sensible precautions when you venture out on the town.
