Facts & Statistics

Tips for Getting In
  • Apply on time or apply early.
  • Be involved in your high school-play sports, write for the newspaper, or help out at school events. Show you care.
  • Be open to new options and opportunities.
  • Be patient.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help.
  • Establish a good relationship with at least two of your high school teachers (or other working professionals) so they can write awesome recommendation letters when the time comes.
  • Follow your interests and passions-join a club or start one of your own!
  • Involve your parents, guardians, or other trusted adults in the process. They have many more years of experience to draw upon than you, and it would be foolish to disregard their suggestions and advice.
  • Obtain at least one leadership position in high school.
  • Persevere.
  • Relax. Make time for yourself to look at the stars, Google inane things, read a book, goof off with friends, or make a paper airplane. Do whatever you don't necessarily have to do and is by no means productive, but you take pleasure in it anyway.
  • Take the SATs/ACTs seriously-they can get you an acceptance letter and a scholarship.
  • Volunteer. Go on a Habitat for Humanity trip or work for a local community service organization.
  • Work hard. Grades matter, but dedication, consistency, and a winning attitude are more important.
  • Write a clear, concise, interesting, and honest admissions essay.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Bring a mattress topper.
  • Crime near campus
  • Poor food quality
  • Small dorm rooms
  • The importance of athletics
  • You should organize and prioritize your work from the get-go; otherwise, you will soon become overwhelmed.
Interviews & Information Sessions
Canisius does not interview undergraduate students. But feel free to stop by the Admissions office and ask questions of your own! Call (716) 888-2200 for more information.
Campus Tours
In addition to fall and spring open houses, Canisius holds 30-minute tours Monday through Friday in the morning at 11:30 a.m. and in the afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Canisius also has several "Saturday Visits" each year, which begin at 10 a.m. and include a presentation by an admissions counselor and a tour.
Overnight Visits
Each year, the Office of Canisius Opportunity Programs for Education (COPE) offers prospective students who are living in the New York City area the chance to stay overnight at Canisius for a taste of the college experience. Transportation is provided in the form of a bus trip. If you're not from NYC but still would like a chance to sleep over, call Canisius (or a friend at Canisius) for details. COPE can be reached at (716) 888-2575.
