3 Recent Alumnus

Facilities: They just opened the WELL, our new gym a few years ago and it is pretty nice.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: Everything is beautiful but sometimes old and dirty

4 College Senior

Facilities: It is a commuter school so not many people live on campus. I have not heard many great things about living on campus.

3 College Senior

Facilities: Again, this is pretty half and half. Half of the buildings are older and about half are newer and fairly fancy. I believe it has been confirmed to have the most species of trees on campus which is a nice touch.

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: I really love all the facilities we have available to us. We're located in a really good spot that we're about 5-10 minutes away from major places if we want to get off-campus.

There are things to do on campus, but there could be more. Arcade rats and pool junkies love the Union, which is always crowded with people doing all sorts of things. One part of the Union that's often overlooked is the Music Listening Room, which a lot of students don't use. The rest of the building is almost always packed, mostly with people relaxing or studying. The Union is the focal point of student life, with the Riverfront Center coming in a close second. Riverfront Center is basically all eateries, so it's naturally a hotbed of activity. However, the Union has more than just food, and pretty much all of the recreational options are located there.

Athletic facilities are open to students, but not all day. The weight rooms, swimming pools, gym, and racquetball courts are only open at night, so unless you have some kind of physical education class, you won't have too many options for physical activity during the day on campus.

School Slang
  • Aggies: Students of UC Davis or residents of the city of Davis
  • Slack State: Nickname reflecting the academic attitudes of many Sac State students
  • The Union: The University Union. This is the main student center on campus.
  • UTAPS: University Transportation and Parking Services
  • The Calaveras Station: The Calaveras Station is the campus literary magazine that's published by the English department. It gets its name from the English building, Calaveras Hall, and strives to produce highbrow reading material. So if your literature tastes are more refined, you should give it a try. If your writing is sophisticated enough, you could even see your short story, essay, or poem published in it.
  • Chickens and Squirrels: For years, Sac State was well-known as a place where chickens and squirrels ran freely around campus. Many newcomers were surprised at how unafraid these creatures were of human contact. Most people loved them, but some people, like President Gonzalez, felt differently. Years ago, the chicken population drastically decreased. Depending on whom you talk to, there are different reasons for this. The most popular rumor is that the president had them rounded up and killed. The other is that he had them sent to a chicken farm. Before this mass chicken disappearance occurred, however, he made no secret about how he wasn't the birds' biggest fan. Say your prayers for the squirrels.
  • The Quads: There are some areas on campus that many students use all the time, they just don't know what the official names for these places are. One place is the Main Quad by the River Front Center. It's a grassy area with trees, and students often study or lie down beneath the shady canopies or have picnics. It's quite popular. The thing is, if you ask most of them what the name of this place is, they look at you in confusion and say something like, "I don't know . . . the grassy area?" More students, however, know the proper name of the Library Quad. This is the area where Greek organizations and other clubs aggressively rush students during the first two weeks of the semester. Campus activities like rallies, guest speakers, and other events take place here. In conversation, if you mention "the Quad" to students, they'll almost always think you're referring to the one by the library instead of the other one.
  • The State Hornet: Sac State's official campus newspaper is the State Hornet, which comes out every Wednesday when school's in. It's free for students, but after a student's first copy of a single issue, he or she is supposed to pay more than a dollar for another one. The State Hornet also produces unique content for a daily website.
Urban Legends
  • After the chickens mysteriously disappeared (true again), a food truck started coming to campus selling fried chicken.
  • The chickens that used to wander around campus (this part is true) were left there years ago as part of a fraternity prank and started reproducing.
  • The chickens were left on campus because of a University experiment.
  • The library was built backwards because builders read the blueprints wrong.
  • The Sutter Hall dorm was originally intended as a temporary structure, but the campus still uses it decades later.
Favorite Things To Do
Between classes, you can burn calories in the cardio weight room, work out in one of the gyms, take a dip in the swimming pool, grab a bite to eat, play arcade or pool with friends, or listen to music in the music room. The school shows free movies in the Union, usually in the late afternoon, but times vary. Featured films are typically ones that were released in theaters months before. Other Union features, like the Games Room, where students can play arcade games or pool, are often crowded all day, and you can definitely go there between classes. The Music Listening Room is always open, but not a lot of people go there. It's a shame, because you can listen to CDs and relax in booths if you want to chill to the sound of your favorite tunes. If you don't have music of your own, they have headphones and lots of CDs provided for you. You can also play board games there or read magazines.
