4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Our campus has become more strict when it comes to breaking up parties, and fining people for noise violations. The safety of the Cal Poly community is taken seriously by Cal Poly Campus Police.

Campus Strictness: The RAs and CAs want you to like them; unfortunately, that means they don't enforce the rules very much, so people will be really loud in the middle of the night and no one will stop them.

3 College Junior

Campus Strictness: I don't like all the red tape which on-campus clubs and organization have to go against to be allowed to do certain things, and I don't like all the hoops you have to jump through when handling certain paperwork with the university. However, I can see why the system is set up the way it is, and I understand that certain policies are in place to ensure the safety of students.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: It's just like every other college. You're chill unless you go out and make stupid decisions.

Campus Strictness: I didn't have many run-ins with campus police while at Cal Poly. The only times I did didn't make the best impression. Because the surrounding area is so safe, they tend to overreact to small emergencies. I rarely had to interact with campus police and the only thing I really disliked about them was the strictness of parking enforcement, which made it hard to have friends over to study while I lived in the dorms.

Cal Poly's safety can be seen as both a blessing and a curse. The biggest crime on campus is bike seat theft, and violent crime is not an epidemic on campus. Since our campus is so safe, the police have time to make sure every rule is followed. This means that students riding skateboards through campus or running stop signs are likely to be met with a citation. Overall, though, most students are thankful that there is a police force that will be there immediately if 911 is called and will help maintain the safe community Poly students have grown to appreciate.

Parking tickets are very common. Not having a permit and parking at the end of a full row or in a spot not allocated for a specific permit (resident parking in a general lot, for example) are valid causes for the receipt of a parking ticket. Ticket penalties are not exorbitantly priced, though, and serve as more of a slap on the wrist.

Facts & Statistics

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Getting caught being drunk in public
  • Having alcohol in a dorm room
  • Not coming to a complete stop at an intersection
  • Parking in a staff area
  • Parking without a permit
  • Riding a skateboard or a bike in a walk-only zone
Visitation Policies
As far as students visiting other students in on-campus housing, the process is fairly straightforward. Any overnight guest should be checked in with the RA or CA. This serves two purposes: to make sure all of the roommates are on board with the guest and also to let the RA or CA know to search for that person in case of an emergency.
