Students regularly liken Bryn Mawr to a sorority. We are all girls, and we rely heavily on formal Traditions held throughout the year. Though we have no Greek social system, Traditions are a cherished part of Bryn Mawr life. Traditions only govern social life to the extent that they bring classes together for song, celebration, and ceremony four times during the school year. As the first three Traditions are designed to welcome women to Bryn Mawr, everyone is strongly encouraged to participate. The decision to not participate is respected, although the desire to include everyone is so strong that the Office of Residential Life and some students developed alternative activities during some Traditions.

For real Greek life like you see on MTV, you’ll have to go elsewhere, but you can attend Bryn Mawr and still go to frat parties at nearby Swarthmore and Villanova. Students who do this are lukewarm about their experiences, but many freshmen take the Swat Van a few times each fall.
