Campus Strictness: The administration treats students like adults. Students are responsible for knowing their own limits, but the university does provide help for those who might have estimated them incorrectly.

Campus Strictness: I haven't been to the campus yet. I'll go for a week in August-2014.

Campus Strictness: Our police department doesn't care about anything, one officer just laughed when he saw my friend smoking weed outside his dorm. I also know someone who had to go to the hospital after drinking too much, and he only had to go to a 1-hour session on safe alcohol consumption or something like that. You're pretty much allowed to do whatever you want at Brown, nobody really cares unless you're endangering anyone

College Freshman

Campus Strictness: They aren't strict enough. It almost seems as if they encourage disrespect for the University.

4 College Student

Campus Strictness: The Brown Police (BroPo) are pretty chill. They usually will only enforce things to keep students safe. As long as you're being conspicuous with your alcohol/drug use, you shouldn't have a huge problem.

The Brown police are not unlike those cool parents you knew in high school: They let the kids have their parties and almost never check out suspicious smells. While the police will nab students for any blatant displays of illegal behavior, they are unlikely to look for it unless staff or students notify them. These days, the main job of the Brown police is crime prevention and not student supervision. In addition, the counselor support system in the dorms provides a safe, open, and fun environment for the students, not a tool for the University to keep an eye on the students in their rooms.

Although many people think enforcement is lax, people do go to dean’s hearings and letters of reprimand are issued every time. The first few offenses stay confidential, but if the school is aware of a real problem, they will notify your parents and require counseling for social- and substance-related issues. Blatant acts of crime against other students, on the other hand, are dealt with more harshly. The University establishes safe, yet liberal boundaries for students and uses security presence to protect, not police, the students.
