3 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: The school clearly has rules, but it is also very hard to get in serious trouble.

4 College Student

Campus Strictness: Not very strict, but students know how to behave.

4 College Senior

Campus Strictness: I find that alcohol consumption will occur regardless of campus police influence. However, I feel it is far more important to have a strict honor code and to deal with protests and demonstrations adequately.

4 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Students are tasked with the responsibility to make their own decisions and deal with the repercussions. School police are not present to get students in trouble but moreso to ensure students' safety and well-being.

5 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Brown is very very lenient! The protest questions is a little awkward...

The Brown police are not unlike those cool parents you knew in high school: They let the kids have their parties and almost never check out suspicious smells. While the police will nab students for any blatant displays of illegal behavior, they are unlikely to look for it unless staff or students notify them. These days, the main job of the Brown police is crime prevention and not student supervision. In addition, the counselor support system in the dorms provides a safe, open, and fun environment for the students, not a tool for the University to keep an eye on the students in their rooms.

Although many people think enforcement is lax, people do go to dean’s hearings and letters of reprimand are issued every time. The first few offenses stay confidential, but if the school is aware of a real problem, they will notify your parents and require counseling for social- and substance-related issues. Blatant acts of crime against other students, on the other hand, are dealt with more harshly. The University establishes safe, yet liberal boundaries for students and uses security presence to protect, not police, the students.
