Nightlife: Night life at BYU has a different meaning from many other schools. Every Monday evening, there is family home evening.

Parties are not super important, and there is pretty much no drinking happening.

1 College Junior

Nightlife: There is basically no real party scene out in the open. There are some there, but they are secret, since you could get kicked out of school for that kind of partying.

3 Recent Alumnus

Nightlife: If you're hoping for a party school you're probably not going to pick BYU.

4 College Senior

Nightlife: This university is deferent than almost all other universities because students are all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Nobody drinks alcohol or uses drugs and if they do they are definitely the exception. Night life is more of just hanging out with friends and going to different places to eat or going on night hikes.

5 College Senior

Nightlife: There's not really alcohol and any of the events off campus that students go to. The entertainment is usually of high quality because people are actually listening.

If you are looking for a late night, party-intensive, bar and club scene kind of college experience, BYU is not for you. Because of the BYU Honor Code, drinking is prohibited, and, therefore, there are no big bars near campus. The one club in Provo is not huge; Salt Lake does have a bigger "nightlife scene." Nothing in Provo stays open very late. However, this doesn't mean that students go to bed early. Students tend to be very creative in their free time and have plenty of fun despite the lack of venues. There is a pretty good local music scene, and in the summer, there are always bonfires up the canyon.

The Student Council at BYU tries to fill the void of big
parties by sponsoring big opening and closing parties every semester. Provo city has a few fun ordinances that prohibit big, loud, private parties. So if you are planning on throwing huge raves, don't bother. Provo is basically good clean fun or nothing, so make sure that you are ready to be creative in your spare time.

Most clubs on campus will have an opening and closing social. These are generally only advertised within the organization, but sometimes, if you watch the boards in the JKHB, you will see flyers announcing socials. These are a great way to meet people with similar interests.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

It doesn't matter in Provo, since there isn't really a bar scene. Twenty-one is a very unfulfilling birthday in Provo, so don't stress if you're not there yet.
