5 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Lots of social activities going on, for the most part, people love hanging out with their neighbors.

Guys & Girls: I mean we get rated pretty high on this every year

Guys & Girls: In the Computer Science Department at BYU, the guys are generally slightly eccentric. They are able to make jokes that no one else understands. They are generally busy with classes or work. Since they spend so much of their time with classes, they spend most of their time with other students in the department.

The girls in the department are few. Last semester, there were two girls in my two CS classes of size 25 each (one in each class). This semester there are two girls in one CS class of about 25 and about 10 in a class of about 100. There is a Women in CS club.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: Definitely lots of preppy, clique-y quintessential Mormons, but if you don't fit into their category, there are plenty of us (there are 30,000 students after all) that don't fit the mold. I would say for the most part dating is a huge thing, but it's mostly initiated by shameless girls, which is kinda weird.

Guys & Girls: Lots of hotties in every major. Pretty much a guy for any girls' type.

BYU students are well known as being uncommonly friendly and inclusive. Although they may look intimidating at first, with their seemingly uniform blond hair and Abercrombie & Fitch clothing, the majority is surprisingly nice, and, if you look hard enough, you may even notice that not quite all of the students are from Utah. Cultural diversity on campus is not big in the common sense, but students are amazingly receptive and knowledgeable about other cultures, as most have lived abroad for anywhere from six months to two years (BYU has great study abroad programs that lots of students take advantage of).

Although most students seem to be cut from the same mold (white, Utah, LDS), this is not a bad thing, since the majority are very upstanding, ambitious, and just plain nice. Most people are outgoing, although the dorms can be a little cliquish. Student wards offer a lot of social interaction, so even if you can't seem to make eye contact with that cute boy in chemistry, there's a good chance that someone knows someone who is in his ward and could set you up with him. Dating is not uncommon at BYU, and some would even claim it gets out of hand (those returned missionaries looking desperately for their eternal companion). All in all, the student body at BYU is just plain amazing.

Social Scene
BYU is a very social campus. A lot of interaction occurs within the student wards or apartment complexes. Even in classes, people are very talkative. Don't be surprised if your first day in class involves at least one person asking about your major and your hometown. People are very outgoing, and dating is a high priority among students.
Hookups or Relationships?
Dating is one of BYU's campus pastimes. A lot of people get married while at BYU, although by no means is this group the majority. Campus Devotionals, given every Tuesday, always seem to mention and urge dating. Places on and around campus often offer discounts for Friday night dates. However, not everyone is serious; NCMOs, or non-committal makeouts, are a popular campus joke and occur more frequently than some students would like! As freshmen, students get very creative in their dating and tend to avoid serious relationships as most of the guys are getting ready to leave for two years.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
The majority of social interaction occurs off campus in student wards and apartment complexes. It seems that at the beginning of the school year, with the prospect of a new ward and new faces, most people are single, although there will be a huge wave of engagements at the end of semesters. By spring, the number of couples multiplies exponentially, and it seems that there is nowhere to go where handholding PDA couples can't be seen. Classes are a good place to meet people, although you do have to do a ring check, especially in upper-division classes-a lot of the good ones are already taken! At the beginning of each semester, each ward will do a ward directory; also known as "the ward menu." It is not uncommon for people to mark the guy or girl that they want to `accidentally' run into at the next ward function, so make sure to look good the first few Sundays of the semester!
Dress Code
The Honor Code includes a section on dress. The dress code is very strict and includes: no tank tops or sleeveless shirts, no shorts or skirts above the knee, no exposed midriffs, no funky hair colors (blue, green, and so on), no facial hair or long, shaggy hair on men, and no offensive clothing. Basically, BYU students are expected to look clean cut and well dressed.
