The meal plan situation is simple at Southern: You have to buy one if you live on campus, and there are only two places to use it. Probably the biggest problem with this simplicity is that there is very little variety when it comes to food choices. You never hear about poor quality food in the Court, but you do hear about how tired people are of the selection. The staff in the cafeteria is what makes all the blasé food bearable, however. With friendly, familiar faces and great service, it's a little easier to handle the lack of options for on-campus dining. The other place to use your meal plan on campus is the C3 convenience store, which has become a favorite of many students. Also, there is the on-campus coffeehouse, the Attic, which is only open late at night but located much closer to the dorms. They recently started serving Starbucks coffee and other products, and the upgrade was noticed by all and appreciated by many.
Most students get the light meal plan, which means you will probably have to get a carload of cokes or waters at the end of the term since your money won't roll over to the next semester. If you opt for the medium or hearty meal plans, though, any leftover money you have at the end of the term can be used for the next semester.
