Local Atmosphere: It's a little too small-town and calm

1 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: This is a tourist town. Old people, churches, and families find themselves infatuated with Berea's campus, but they do not have to live here. They take a few pictures, eat, and leave. As a student, things get pretty old. If you like outdoor activities, you might be slightly interested, but still nothing special. Many colleges have party strips and areas on campus most students can relieve their stress and have a great time, but Berea does not. Students are forced to either have dorm parties or off campus parties, which both get shut down for being too loud. Many stores around the school close early (except for McDonalds and Taco Bell). Berea is a dry town, and this is very unattractive for food chains such as Applebees' (who use their liquor license). There are also no shopping districts. Walmart is the only one, and c'mon... its Walmart. You need to drive at least 15 minutes before reaching any kind of fun.

Local Atmosphere: Berea College is a charming small college town. It feels welcoming, and there are cute small stores the students can go in and look or hang out in. The college gives an overall relaxed feeling.

Local Atmosphere: Berea is a beautiful town, it is small and quite, but the fact art is really appreciated over here. There are so many shops of handicrafts and hand made goods. Local musicians and artists are really appreciated over here, mainly people here are from the Appalachian region which makes the local culture richer. The campus is very safe as the public safety is very efficient and keeps up with the security on campus. Country dancing is very popular over here so is gymnastics.

3 College Senior

Local Atmosphere: There is not much to do once you leave the campus, Walmart is a big attraction for shopping. There are nice coffee shops and some local events such as the annual SpoonBread festival.

Berea is an average small city. There are some festivals that happen here and there and enough restaurants and little malls to supply the students with their needs, but overall, not too much happens here. There is a small skating rink and a Wal-Mart to keep students somewhat occupied, but the city generally lacks in entertainment. On the plus side, this area is embedded in the Appalachian Mountains and is beautiful. It is a quiet and a peaceful place to escape the pressures of bigger cities. Plus, the community embraces the College and its students.

In general, Berea is a nice place to stop by, but students looking for more to do usually head to Richmond or Lexington. Richmond is about 15 minutes from Berea and is home to Eastern Kentucky University. Lexington is 40 miles away but has lots of things to keep a student entertained. A little farther away is Louisville. There is a Six Flags theme park and other universities there, like the University of Louisville. Overall, Berea students spend less time on campus and in Berea and more time going to Richmond and Lexington to have fun.
