While Ave Maria does enforce its policies, campus security and the RAs are typically understanding and flexible with many rules. The RAs especially are fair and give students warnings for dress code or disciplinary violations. Some of the rules are very unique to AMU, and the students are generally compliant with obeying them, while less-obtrusive policies—such as those pertaining to dress code—are more leniently enforced. The attendance rules here are a bit stricter, but they are ultimately up to the discretion of each professor, who decides his or her own attendance policy. Of course, attendance is always encouraged, and some professors are stricter than others, but the situation varies. As far as guest visitation is concerned, the school is fairly lenient as long as the students abide by the rules (i.e. filling out the forms when necessary).
By far the strictest rule at Ave Maria concerns the presence of the opposite sex in the dorms. Guys must be accompanied by a girl in the girls' dorms and can only be in the common rooms and lobby. The same is true for girls: They must be escorted by a guy in the male dorms and can only be in the common rooms. The opposite sex is never to be in the dorm rooms. Overall, with the exception of the rule concerning guys and girls in the dorms, Ave Maria is fairly flexible, and although the consequences (fines) can be harsh, the demand for them is rare.
