Campus Dining: Poor at First, but Improving – Auburn has made a genuine push to get better dining over the past couple years. They added the food carts, Panda Express, Dennys, revamped Terrell dining, etc. However, the campus dining still needs work. Everything is a-la-carte, so you need to pay upfront for anything you eat. No dining halls where you can eat anything you want, which disappointed me. There are very limited homemade meals (Chef's Table and BBQ at Foy). Everything is generally outsourced to companies, which I'm not crazy about because they force you to buy a meal plan and the food is expensive. Not much flexibility with the meal plan, unfortunately. However, as I said, it is improving.

Majors: Not Enough Motivated Students – As an out of state student, I don't feel as though I am making connections that will help propel me to greatness in the future. Most engineers keep to themselves and intend to go back home to small towns in Alabama. My professional goal is to run a private equity firm utilizing the ideas I learned in industrial engineering, and while I'm learning well at Auburn, I don't feel as though there are enough people surrounding me that I'll be able to connect with in the future to help me get there. However, I'm sure all those students will get more than decent jobs around the area.

Majors: Excellent If You Have Interest – The Industrial Engineering program at Auburn is really quite good.If you make yourself known to the teachers, they will help you gain a deep understanding of the material. I have used many of the skills I have developed in classes in areas I never thought I would. I'm working at a trading desk in an investment firm, and have used manufacturing strategies, engineering economic concepts (over and over), and tons of statistical analysis I learned in industrial classes. I feel very comfortable with the material. However, going to class is critical. This is not a major you can learn by yourself with the textbook a week before the tests.
I am a student who thrives when surrounded by motivation. In Industrial Engineering, I did very well in the classes. However, I did not see many other people at all doing well. Most students didn't attend classes (classrooms are generally 2/3 empty), did not know how to study, and would often do little work in group projects. While the teachers are smart and will teach you things that are interesting, in general the discipline of the students is very mediocre. This makes classes frustrating at times.

Transportation: Tiger Transit and the Security Shuttle – The School and the City have pooled resources to create a public transportation system. The buses, which run all day, are free, as well as the security shuttle which runs from 7pm to 7am, and is actually run by the Auburn Police Department. The school also has buses which go to grocery stores at certain times for student who live on campus but do not have access to a car.

Campus Housing: I Haven't Had Enough Experiences in the Dorms – I only lived in the dorms for a weekend during orientation. It wasn't my most favorite experience, but because I was only in there for a few days, I do not think it is right to comment on the quality of the dorms.

Diversity: Since Auburn is located in Alabama (in the "Bible Belt" of the country), conservative Christian churches are common. However, there are many other denominations represented at churches in the area.

Off-Campus Dining: There are many restaurants that are convenient to campus. There is a mixture of fast food restaurants and "original" places.

Academics: Profs Are Open and Friendly – Auburn is a big school and no matter how you work it, chances are you will have a class with 300 people in it.

It is scary at first, but write down your professor's office hours and drop in and say "hi". People are afraid they won't know what to talk about, so open up with: "Hey my name is _____. Can you look over my notes to make sure I am not missing anything important"

I have never seen or experienced a professor who turns away their students during their "mandatory office hours"***. If you catch them at the right time, they might hint at test questions if it means they don't have to attend that boring faculty meeting.

***- Sometimes finding their office hours is difficult, the best solution is to contact them via email, or if they are part of the graduate program ask if you could meet them for lunch.

Overall Experience: War Eagle and Go Tigers! I love Auburn. Once you figure out how to mix the party and the studying, it is an amazing campus to be at. I didn't give it an "A+" because you have to find what you love, it doesn't come to you. Life was boring until I joined a church group and a couple of clubs.

To get the best experience you can out of Auburn attend every "Orientation Week" activity you can and get the phone number of anyone you connect with. In addition visit a lot of clubs and devote yourself to only a couple. Auburn starts off slow to give you time to start your bearings, but by the 3rd week it is at a full sprint. Don't get left behind!

Guys & Girls: Girls Are AMAZING – The girls at Auburn are drop dead gorgeous, and everyone of them is super nice. Don't be fooled into thinking the campus is swamped with obnoxious sorority girls. I guarantee your apartment or dorm is teeming with pretty girls who would love to go on a date, or form a study group, or show up at a tailgating party.

Campus Dining: Tons of Variety on Weekdays – Auburn has tons of options open for food. Chickfila, Panda Chinese, Salsaritas, Papa Johns, Au Bon Pain, Delis, Nathans, and a Denny's, not to mention all of the other dining areas that change their menu every day. It is difficult to get tired of the food on weekdays.

The problem is many of these places are not open exactly when you want them too. It can be tough getting breakfast before an 8am class, and weekends can be very tough getting food. But once you get used to the cycle it is easy to live with.

My advice: You are pretty much on your own on weekends, and have a couple of frozen dishes just in case. But no matter what, your friends from other schools will be jealous of all the options you have.

Nightlife: Bars and Parties a Plenty, Safe Travel – The bars are all conveniently located in downtown Auburn by Toomer's Corner. Some are always 19+, but my personal favorites are usually 21+ on weekends. Frat parties are usually going on and easy for girls to get into. Campus provides security shuttles at night within campus as well as Toomer's 10 on the weekends heading from off-campus apartments to downtown Auburn, giving (most) everyone a safe travel option for going out and partying.

Weather: The weather is great. It does not get too cold in the winter.

Greek Life: Out of about 25,000 students only 9% are greek. It is certainly a way to meet people and get invloved with the school as well as the community, but Auburn offers many other student groups so it's easy to get involved either way.

Transportation: Tiger Transit Is Best Option – Public transportation is easy to access and you can get anywhere you need to be within 30 min tops. Parking is also readily available but even walking is quite convient at Auburn

Campus Dining: Dining Options – There are so many options and they are mostly pretty awesome. We have chickfila and panda.

Campus Dining: A Lot of Choices, but Gets Old If You Live on Campus – There are quite a few places to eat spread out on campus, but many of them are not open all of the time. This can be frustrating if you live on campus. . . I lived in the upper quad and if I wanted to eat on campus at night, the only nearby choices were Chick-fil-A, Au Bon Pain, Papa John's, and Starbucks. The Village, on the other hand, has a large variety of places that are open at night. I guess it all depends on where you live.

Facilities: The Libraray Is Unmatchable – Auburn's Ralph Brown Draughon Library is the most optimal place for studying. It has four floors full of resources and a lowermost floor that contains many artifacts of the state of Alabama. Each floor serves a purpose, with the first floor giving students access to a digital media center and a copying center, the second floor allows for writing and tutoring help as well as access to many computers, the third floor is perfect for group study with many mobile dry erase boards and group studying rooms, and the fourth floor is the perfect place for individual study as it demands silence and offers smaller partitions for even better focus. It is where I get the most productive studying done

Scholarships: Process Could Have Been a Little More Helpful – Financial aid department could have been a little more helpful, but maybe I wasn't asking the right questions. I just feel that financial aid is a difficult thing in its self so they should try to make it as easy as possible.

5 College Senior

Campus Dining: Variety of Places to Eat – Auburn just built a brand new student center that houses many different restaurants. Including Chick-fil-a, Panda Express, Papa Johns, Starbucks, etc. We have such a verity of places to eat it is incredible. And thats just what is offered in the Student Center. There are various sandwich restaurants on campus and downtown Auburn (Toomers Corner) also has many restaurants which is just a 5 min walk away.

Weather: Hot Summers, Rainy Winters and Springs – People's opinions about Alabama weather vary. If you like mild winters and high heat, you'll do just fine. However, if you crave snow and ice and cold temperatures, the climate won't suit you very well. In the colder months, it's usually too warm to snow (though you might get an inch or two once a year), so it rains. Rain boots or other water-proof shoes are IMPERATIVE to survive here.

Guys & Girls: Girls are hot? Yeah, if hot means JERKS. I have never met such snobby stuck-up people, particularly with the females. Girls fit one of three molds. They are either obsessed with their sorority, a rich brat, or a Jesus freak. Most of the time the girls are 2 or even 3 out of the 3. If you're a strong Christian or are in love with your sorority, power to you. However, I don't like hearing "Daddy will pay for it because, hello, I'm a princess," or how "Your sins are worse than mine, so you're a child of the devil."
I've heard multiple girls make these statements on a daily basis. I really wish I was joking. I don't know who told them otherwise, but being spoiled or judgmental is not attractive. Obviously, this doesn't describe 100% of the Auburn population, but from what I've seen - it's the majority. Guys are either sweet and quiet or are the loud partying frat type. Like any school, there are good-looking students if you look in the right place. The men look decent and are pretty clean-cut, especially if they're preppy. However, the girls are ALWAYS dressed in nike shorts, chacos or sneakers, and an over-sized T-shirt. Frankly, they look like crap, but in their huge heads, they think they're the hottest thing to walk the earth.
If that kind of attitude isn't your scene, beware. You will most likely struggle to find your niche.

Majors: I am very happy with my decision and would not think twice about doing it again. I am very focused and driven towards reaching my goal as a doctor. I am so pleased that Auburn accepted me and is preparing me for a successful future.

5 College Junior

Majors: The program takes great dedication and is not designed for everyone. The core classes are difficult and the hours are long. The professors are very helpful and provide study sessions to help prepare for exams.

Overall, students are very happy to be in Auburn. They love the people around them and the experiences that they get to have.

College is what you make of it. If you sit at home and don't do anything, then you won't enjoy yourself no matter where you go. With all the options you have offered to you at Auburn, you have to try to not have a good time. And with a student body that is so happy to be here, it's also hard not to get swept up in the excitement. As always, it's a good idea to visit a college or university before making a final decision. Make sure you're as happy and comfortable as you can possibly be.
