Campus Strictness: Parking Is Intense – It's hard to park anywhere on campus without getting fined for it. Everywhere there are limits to where you can park and most of the time a cop is always out to mark your tires if you stay in that spot too long.

Drug Safety: Drugs Are Most Popular – Drugs on Appalachian's campus are pretty prevalent. The main drug seen visibly is Marijuana. I have seen it out walking around on campus often. Drinking is also an issue but the drugs are even bigger.

Overall Experience: I Love It Here – I would never transfer from App because it is the best place to go to school. The chancellor really cares about the students and he get involved in so many things. He attends every home football game, he has students over to his house, which is on campus, for dinner and if you have a suggestion for something to improve he will take it into serious consideration. It is small enough that the professors know your name but big enough to get a diverse education and have the opportunity to be involved in many different clubs and sports and whatever else you want to do. You can walk just about everywhere and the bus system is awesome and runs all day.

Local Atmosphere: Boone Might Be Small but There Is a Lot to Do – Boone is right on the Blue Ridge Parkway so going to that is a big thing lots of people do on the weekends and on breaks. There are many beautiful attractions within 30 minutes from campus and they are easy to find.

Academics: The Professors Are Awesome!!! I came to Appalachian because of the School of Music and the professors who teach here. They are so willing to help with anything you need and want you to succeed. The curriculum is very well-rounded and I feel like I have learned a lot from my non-major classes. I have never had a problem with the registration process and my workload is average for a music major, 12 classes/18 hours. ASU offers so many study-abroad options that anyone would be able to find something they are interested in.

Nightlife: We Just Became a Wet County 10 Years Ago – Nightlife is ok in Boone, most of the time you have to make your own fun. The three bars we do have are 21 or older and the ABC Spirits closes at 9pm. It is a small town and we used to be a dry county until recently so not much.

Campus Housing: Not Enough Room for Everyone – There aren't enough dorms on-campus for everyone who needs to live on campus. After sophomore year, you are lucky to get housing on campus because there is nowhere to grow in Boone. I knew I wasn't going to get housing on campus for next year so my roommate and I got an apartment but I am student teaching next spring so I have to find a subleaser for that semester.

Computers: There are many computers available on-campus that you don't have to have a personal computer but it is really nice. The main library is open 24/5 a week and on the weekends during the day so you can use a computer whenever you want. The wireless is pretty reliable on-campus but in my dorm the internet connection is terrible. Printing is really cheap, I actually prefer to print something in the library than on my printer because it is cheaper than buying ink cartridges for my printer.

Health & Safety: A Very Safe Campus – The Campus Safety alarms have never been used. It's probably the safest campus I've ever heard of!

Facilities: The Campus Is Great! The campus is very beautiful and state-of-the-art! Appalachian State University selects a different building every year and sets it aside for a total renovation. This keeps the campus looking new and well-taken care of. The student facilities are great, and there are plenty of places to hang out and eat! It's a fantastic campus!

Greek Life: While Greek life is offered and somewhat popular, it's not as big at ASU as some other universities I have visited. Most chapters on campus are open and welcoming to anyone interested, and most chapters have good reputations among the community and Chancellor.

Guys & Girls: Guys and Girls – Appalachian hosts a very accepting atmosphere for students. We have interest groups from several religions and ethnicities as well as greek life and many student led associations for almost every personal interest imaginable.

5 College Sophomore

Off-Campus Dining: While we don't offer many vegetarian options, we do offer restaurants from nearly every ethnic variety. Local dining is very cost effective, offering something for everyone from cheap late night food to fine dining and black tie places.

Transportation: There is a bus system at Appalachain called the Appalcart. It's route goes through campus, downtown, and to college apartment complexes. It is free is extremely convenience. It also runs during the winter, which is very important because it snows quite often in the mountains. I love the bus system at Appalachain.

Diversity: There is some diversity on campus. This area could be drastically improved though. The majority of students on campus are white. Appalachian State could change it up a bit and get more ethnicities on campus. Although, there acceptance of gay/lesbian/transgender/bisexual people is wonderful. I have so many friends who are apart of there organization on campus and they do everything they can to support it.

Health & Safety: Safety First – The safety of student's at Appalachian State is definitely a first priority. I have never felt unsafe on campus. Campus police are always around and there are emergency lights in case something were to ever happen. It's a small campus so police access is very efficient and fast.

Academics: Secondary English Ed – I have just started working on my course load for my major and its tough but doable. the English Professors are wonderful so far, and helpful. the Education Professors are also fun and interesting and im enjoying the classes I'm in. the amount of required classes leave very little room to add a minor though, unless you plan way in advance

Local Atmosphere: I Love It but You Might Not – Boone is a wonderful place to go to school if you aren't into the nightlife and big-city feel. The town is very quiet and closes down at 5pm and is very small. If you're into outdoor activities or snow, Boone is the perfect place to go, though i suggest investing in a coat and snow boots since Winter is the longest season here.

Weather: Snows Alot! In Boone, it is inevitable that it will snow. Seriously. It will snow. Sometimes the school will put student lives in danger just b/c they don't want to cancel school. We canceled several times last year, and that was a surprise.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: Few Options! Night life in Boone is restricted to two or three minor bars that are so cramped for space. There's no real club, and for underagers, you're better off in your dorm over the weekends.

3 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: Town Is Built Around ASU – The only reason Boone thrives economically is because of ASU. Otherwise, Boone would just be a hole-in-the-wall place. King Street is inconducive to student activities, everything closes at 5 on the weekends. Otherwise, there's a pretty good selection. Most major chains are represented in Boone.

Parking: Parking is absolutely terrible and the parking and traffic people are only out to get you. They really will ticket anything and everything as often as they can. I once was parked somewhere to unload groceries for 5 mins and got a ticket, nevermind it was 450, and I was able to park there at 500. The parking office is looking to make more money. When it snows, they don't really care about scraping everything well.

3 College Junior

Greek Life: Greek life is only big for those involved except during rush week. But otherwise, I don't hear much about greek life. I'm sure there are parties and stuff, but I don't see them more than occasionally wearing a T-shirt. I don't actually know what any of the greeks are about.

2 College Junior

Guys & Girls: Sometimes I wonder about the people at ASU. They can be kind of strange. The school is over-run by hippies with dreads. I don't mind hippies or dreads, but they all come out and congregate on the mall when it's sunny, and you realize just what a liberal campus we have. Overall, it feels there is very little variety at app. Everyone looks the same.

Campus Strictness: I feel there actually very few strict measures at school. Basically, if you're not dumb, you'll be fine. The school could care less about what you do, until it's something really severe. Campus is dead on the weekends, unless there's a football game. Then, they don't care what you do, unless it gives ASU bad publicity.
