Drug Safety: The drug scene at Appalachian State depends on who you hang out with. Alcohol is the most used drug as at any college. Other drugs depend on who you hang out with.

Local Atmosphere: The locals are great, probably because the students bring in so much business. A common attraction is the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its a great place to go to unwind, as is Tweetsie Railroad. The unique shops offer axcellent shopping opportunities.

5 College Sophomore

Facilities: The music program is one of the best around. The music building has tons of practice rooms and there is even a hangout spot on the roof! All the teachers are very good and fun to listen to, if you can believe that!

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: There are a lot of great places to hang out at, whether you want to hang with friends or study for a big test. Sometimes the places get crowded, dpending on the time of day and where you are at. The library has 4 floors, each with a different noise level, apart from the 4th floor. Its very nifty.

Guys & Girls: Someone for Everyone – The range of people at ASU is crazy. You'll find everyone from hippies and earthy type to a large selection of pretty preppy Greek people. There are plenty of hot guys and lots of pretty girls (coming from a girl).

Off-Campus Dining: Good Variety – There's a good variety of places to eat off campus, something for everyone. The cost is pretty fair and many restaurants are geared towards students.

3 College Sophomore

Weather: Sucks If You Dislike the Cold – If you don't like cold weather, then don't come to Boone. It's cold a majority of the year, and classes are seldomly cancelled.

3 College Sophomore

Diversity: Decent, I Guess – There are a ton of white people here, but there are also different races of people here, as well as people from different countries around the globe.

3 College Senior

Guys & Girls: Guys and Girls – everyone are doing thier on thing. appalachian is a very great and calm envoriment. people are most the time pretty respectful and polite

4 College Senior

Drug Safety: Drinking Vs Drugs – drinking is very popular but drugs are not really a problem as far as i know.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: You Have to Try – Each major has its own requirements but none are unreasonable. You have to put in real honest effort but it is worth it. All majors require general education classes (also required to graduate, you can't avoid it). The gen ed. classes aren't very fun but they give you a good basis for preparing for your major. The biggest tip of all is.... keep your grades up!

3 College Sophomore

Computers: Very Good Computer Access – There are plenty of computer labs on campus. Internet reliability can be shotty in the dorms but it is usually fixed a week or so into the school year. It cost 3 cents per page to print unles you have your own. It is a good idea to have a computer and printer, but you can get by without either.

Overall Experience: I Love It Here! I enjoy Appalachian State University. The people are great and there are so many cool places to go. The best part is that App is only minutes from the Blueridge parkway. It is loads of fun to take a short fieldtrip with your friends along the parkway. The music scene here is great too. There is a genre of music for everyone here.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Firm but Fair – Appalachian State University does have rules, like any campus, but it isn't going to have a huge impact on student lives. Really, the rules and punishments are no different than what parents generally do. Of course you can lose financial aid if you aren't careful. All in all, the school expects students to act a certain way but understands that we all make mistakes and act a little crazy sometimes.

Greek Life: Get Involved Today! Greek Life at ASU is a great way to meet people with similar intrests as you. There are lots of opportunities to learn more about Greek life. They have cookouts that raise money for several organizations and every is invited to get involved!

Campus Housing: Campus Dorms – Freshmen generally get the older dorms. It's almost a rite of passage. They're small and concrete block type interior. You CAN get all of your stuff in there if you utilize the under-bed storage very well. When you see them at first you'll say - No WAY~ but, campus life is great, regardless of where you are. You adapt because most every freshman has the same environment. Upperclassman Dorms are nicer, but they're also more expensive. The fact is, there is a shortage of dorms for upperclassman and many choose to live of campus anyway.

Parking: As freshmen, you're last in parking selections and you're pretty much destined for the State Farm lot. Good news - Applcart goes to and from there on a regular schedule. Bad news - it takes a while to get to/from there, but it is well lit and has roaming security. Good news- Compare that to college campuses that don't allow freshman parking options at all. That's pretty good.
There are some off campus parking options are pretty close and on the Applcart routes but will be, in most cases, more expensive.

Weather: Expect Cool – Expect cold in the winter months. We're in the mountains!! Most of the rest of the time has been mild and beautiful. Also, make sure you're equipped with a raincoat & rubber rain boots. It does rain & when it does, it can get muddy. What compensates for the rain???....The beautiful double rainbows that can be seen afterwards over campus and the mountains!

Off-Campus Housing: Availability Is Pretty Good. Though I haven't taken advantage of off campus housing yet, I can answer based upon what my friends have experienced. The trick is starting early. Go look at what you think is your fav's. See how each compare & make sure they're in close proximity to an Applcart Stop!

4 College Sophomore

Facilities: Advising Department – My college's advising department offers great help to those who are still undecided about their major as well as those who are dead-set on their intended major pathway. They stay with you step-by-step and always remind you of upcoming deadlines!

4 College Junior

Transportation: The bus system is pretty good here. Definitely easier if you live on-campus, because even if you miss the bus, everything is in walking distance. Off campus buses, like the ones that go down 105- fill up a LOT faster, and you may have to even wait until the next one comes to your stop. Good during snowy weather too. If the Appalcart can't run, no class!

3 College Junior

Campus Housing: Some Are Better Than Others. Freshman housing is sub-par, especially Gardner Hall. You can't even hardly walk in those rooms without bumping into each other or furniture.. Upperclassmen dorms and on-campus apartments are nicer though.

2 College Junior

Campus Dining: It's okay if you like eating the same things over and over again..

Overall Experience: I Love It – Appalachian has a very pretty campus. There are alot of outdoor activities to do. However, there is not much to do in the town because it's small

3 College Junior

Off-Campus Housing: Off Campus Rocks – Off campus is definitely the way to go! The school doesn't have enough housing on campus so the want you to go off campus.
