Drug Safety: Considering I have not been confronted with it yet, and do not take part in such actions, I would say the drug scene is not a huge issue at my school. Only a few times have I witnessed students taking part in such actions. The peer pressure is also not an issue; if it's not your idea of a good time, no one forces it on you. Those who take part understand why others would not. I believe the policy enforcement has become much stricter in previous years. Three weeks into school a student in my dorm building was arrested late at night for trying to smoke in his room, and I have even seen police officers with specially trained dogs in the parking lot in the middle of the night from my room window. My college seems to be well-known for parties, alcohol, and drug use, but if you stay away from it, it's like it isn't even there.

Drug Safety: There are drugs and alcohol on my campus just like at any campus. Primarily marijuana. There is not a lot of visible drinking and drug usage on campus, but it is generally understood that a lot of students take part in the drug scene. Usually, people are smart enough to take their illegal activities off campus.

Academics: One of two schools that had a degree program that was up my alley, not too many places have it.

Campus Strictness: I haven't ever had a run in with security, so I'm not quite sure what they're like.

Health & Safety: Once again, this isn't a service I use very much so I feel an opinion one way or another wouldn't be applicable.

3 College Junior

Transportation: I don't really have to use the transportation services, living on campus really helps me out.

Drug Safety: You rarely ever hear about drug problems on campus, and I've never seen any activity myself.

Diversity: It's an average campus diversity, no one seems out of place, we're all a big family.

Weather: You couldn't ask for a better climate. Great elevation and perfect four season years.

3 College Junior

Off-Campus Dining: If I go off campus I drive to Wilkes and have Mexican, it's the best around.

3 College Junior

Nightlife: I'm not big in the partying scene, so I don't feel that a statement higher than it's okay should be given.

Campus Housing: As a Freshman you will probably be put in a dorm that is old with tiny rooms. All the dorms (except one) are co-ed; some are separated by floor & some have same sex halls. Gardner is an old building but it's right beside the football stadium & has a small dinning all & field across the street, & located near the duck pond. Mountaineer Hall (hotel style) & Appalachian Heights (apartment style) are great housing options for upperclassman-but they're up a HUGE hill!

Transportation: Most places are within walking distance, but if not there are several buses that will take you where you need to go for free, there's also the safe ride service that you can call to pick you up and take you wherever you need to go (also free) and good for areas the buses won't take you, if the buses aren't running, etc.

Greek Life: Greek life is VERY service oriented-there are always fundraisers or special events hosted greek students to support the community. Greek and non-greek students get along very well (since everyone on campus is friendly)

4 College Student

Diversity: The vast majority of students are white, but there are numerous foreign students. The students are very diverse in personality, political beliefs, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Our campus is extremely friendly (students & professors) and very accepting.

Health & Safety: There's a police station on campus and they are quick to respond, most campus crime has to do with drug abuse but there are occasional thefts (the thieves are always caught), there's a campus 'safe ride' that you can use at all hours and emergency phones placed all over campus. There's also an alter system you can sign up for to keep you informed on any crime on or near campus.

3 College Student

Off-Campus Housing: There are always postings & deals about off campus housing around the end or beginning of each semester. There is limited availability for housing on campus so there are TONS of apartments around campus (most within walking distance). Each complex (that i've seen) has it's own parking, pets are allowed, and are generally in nice condition.

3 College Student

Nightlife: Boone is a small town so there's not much to do in town, parties & live music at Legends, there's a tap room across the street from the campus, & a free bus system that will take you just about anywhere you need to go-and when that's not running you can use safe ride (also a free service)

4 College Student

Campus Strictness: Students are for the most part allowed to express themselves, the school steps in if things become dangerous or illegal.

3 College Student

Athletics: We're located in the south, so naturally football is the biggest thing around, the stands are always packed, the entire town becomes full of fans, & the student section is always energetic, & sometimes a little crazy!

4 College Student

Scholarships: The financial aid office works very hard to process your information quickly & get you the help you need. If you have any questions you can email the office and usually receive a quick, helpful response.

3 College Student

Weather: The weather changes very quickly! But It's typically cold in the winter, and moderate (mid to high seventies) in the summer.

4 College Freshman

Transportation: On campus transportation is easy, off campus is fairly simple, and long distance is cost effective and timely.

5 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: There are restaurants everywhere, with all kinds of different selections! My favorite is Boone Bagelry, which has a great breakfast and is open till 3 am!

4 College Freshman

Nightlife: There are several clubs and bars around town that the students frequent, but they all card at the door so underage drinking is rare in the bars/clubs. The transportation is good too, there's a university run operation called Safe Ride that will pick up any student on or near campus and take them back to their dorm. They run from 8 pm to late into the night.
