Academic Experience: Experience So Far – My major is business, and my clasess are what i need for my major i didn't have to take any weird electives this semester and my clasess are pretty straightforward. My clasess aren't to much but just enough to handle.

Academic Flexibility: Only a Step up. I chose to go to this school because it is much cheaper than going to a 4 year university. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get into classes and with so many cutbacks they are still raising the tuition cost. This is only a step before I transfer, but is becoming one large step. I have been going to this school for 2 years now and am only half way done with my associates.

Career Services: They have options and offices to help you get a job or find post-grad oppurtunities. Nothing special, average school quality of post-grad help.

4 College Sophomore

Academic Flexibility: Academic Flexibility – This school offers courses throughout the entire day and night with two campuses located 15 minutes within each other. So you have two locations to choose from and a good range of times. You are more than likely to fit a schedule that fits your life. The only problem is actually registering for these classes as you are battling it out with a bunch of other students. But if you are like me (Watching course registration like a HAWK) you will get what you want. Trust me, if you aren't a hawk you will NOT get what you want. Only HAWKS get the schedule they want.

Student Body: All kinds of people come to my college! And for the most part everyone gets along, although politically and religiously I think the school is one side but I think that has to do why the outside commmunity more.

Tuition & Financial Aid: I Got It – I got my financial aid but it did take me awhile to understand what I had to do to get it!

Academic Flexibility: This year my classes are all over the place! I still need one more class and it's a general ed class but it's the hardest one to get into! I also dont have a car so I have to wait years on campus till my next class

Campus Resources: I havent found anything about my college that would make it stand out.

3 College Junior

Overall Experience: So Far – I love at the college is very diverse and that they are updating the campus however there is a limited amount of classes and that makes graduating sooner then later difficult.

Campus Resources: Wireless Access – Wireless access on campus is non-existent. Being able to access the internet, particularly class lectures while on campus would be more beneficial for a lot of people. Nursing students have to print out 30, 40 and sometimes 50 page lecture slides, which we all are often unable to do so due to the cost to maintain an ink supply.

3 College Senior

Academic Experience: Tough Curriculum – As a nursing student, it's tough! Although lecture is one day a week, and clinical hours are only twice a week, you'd think I had time to relax. But I really don't. Due to the 12-hour shifts and endless reading assignments, seems never ending. However, I understand all the hard work is sure to pay off.

Campus Resources: Shoulders to Lean on for Nursing Students – As a nursing student it is difficult to pursue a degree without the assistance of family, friends and college personnel. I am so thankful for the nursing counselors in our school's learning center! Not only are they there to review exams with you, but they understand the difficulties of being a nursing student- they can provide me with tools they themselves have used to succeed in the nursing program that worked!

Campus Resources: Kind of Run Down – The facilities are quite old, and not always kept up well. The biggest complaint is the library, which is very outdated compared to others. However, the online database is awesome. I love it!

Academic Experience: Some Great, Others Wasted Entire Semesters of My Time – AVC has some really amazing professors who really make it worthwhile, but there are a number who are a waste of all of our time. I have had professors who ditched class often, and one who also refused to grade any work the students had done for an entire semester. One professor, teaching a class for people interested in becoming teachers, spent the ten weeks she showed up in class telling us all that it was a waste of time to become a teacher, and that we would immediately regret it. By the end of the class, there were seven people still in it.
Still, people like Mark Hoffer are engaged in their students, and treat us as adults. Jeffrie Ahmad is wonderful and teaches in an organic, entertaining class setting. John Vento always made me laugh. That's why I gave it a B.

Overall Experience: Some Serious Students, Some Serious Professors – My experience at AVC is that there are a lot of students who are not serious, and who are clogging up the schedules and appointment slots for those who are serious. Those who are stealing financial aid from the system do not seem to get punished, and AVC does not have enough resources to handle the high amount of students.

More importantly, AVC has some really brilliant professors. Ahmad, Hoffer, Cassady, Vento, and many others have definitely made my time at school worthwhile intellectually. As for school spirit, there is not much on campus. Serious students try to not spend so much time with the non serious ones, and the others don't tend to associate with the school.

Career Services: Post Grad Services – I have not yet had the chance to experience these services yet.

Campus Resources: Network Availability Not a Problem. I never had a problem with their network The Computer lab sometimes was busy but if you knew the times to go there then you wouldn't have a problem. If a teacher had a problem then she would have someone there assisting her or sometimes a student would help in figuring out the problem. Printing became a problem when they started to limit to 10 and then started charging. It was easier to invest in a good printer and lots of ink.

Academic Experience: Registered Nursing Program – I feel that the school is overcrowded. There is such an overload in registering, but too many students drop or don't show up after weeks in attendance, which is sad for the ones that really need the class. The school is trying and applying good programs to help generate admissions/registrations. I feel that the workload and curriculum is a little challenging and requires full attention and extra curricular activities, tutoring and study programs for you and other students to work together. For someone like myself, in my 40's going back to school, it is a busy job trying and finding your way around the school for what is available to you or what is expected of you to do.I find myself always asking the younger students for guidance and they will tell you from their experience what you should do, it's just easier and faster that way for me.

Campus Resources: The campus is set up very well with Resources being the central focus of the campus. In the center of the campus is a 2 story library that contains computer access, reserve textbooks and many other books and periodicals appropriate for the education of the student. Staff is very well to assist all students. The Learning Center is directly from the library. The Learning Center offers tutoring on a drop-in or scheduled basis by the top students on campus. The school as recently been undergoing construction on several new buildings; such as a brand new 375 seat Dramatic Arts theater, a new Health Sciences building and construction has been completed on a brand new athletic stadium. Across from the Library and next to the Learning Center is the Student Services building containing the Transfer dept., counseling, Financial Aid, Registration, Cashier and Student Development offices. The campus offers many activities for students to become involved in especially in the various academic and special interest clubs.

Online Courses: Online Workload – The workload for Online courses is equal to in-class workload and in some cases it can actually exceed the amount of work in-class. The reason is that the material is basically self-study with some online lecture. Much is by reading. It is very possible to well in online courses as long as the work and reading are complete. The amount of effort placed in an online class should be equal to that of in-class. I never felt overwhelmed by work in my online classes and it was often easier to schedule the work around other subjects because I didn't have schedule conflicts.

Academic Experience: There are many tutors available in the Learning Center of Antelope Valley College. All have been selected from the best students who possess the skills and qualities of a good student. They are role models for other student. The provide tutoring aimed at helping the students think for themselves but provide backup knowledge and material to make successful students across all curriculum. The requirements to be a tutor are stringent and the student must maintain no less than a B in the subject(s) for which they tutor. The are often times available on a drop-in basis or by appointment. They can tutor in a group setting or on an individual basis. The success of the student tutee is the greatest joy the tutor receives. The Learning Specialists are all college graduates with Master's degrees and the Director of each area are professors in their fields. A student would find great success and assistance in any of their course work by using tutors in the Learning Center.

Student Body: Overall the school is good about diversity of the students and the school is really good about keeping activities going but if you dont qualify for financial aid it seems like sometimes it comes back to bite you in the but when you are not getting the advantage that other students who do are.

3 Recent Alumnus

Campus Resources: Photography Computer Labs – This is what I use most often but unless its toward the end of the semester when everyone is trying to finish there lab hours then you will most likely find a computer to use. Computers run great but the lab tech will get mad at you if you are not working on something related to the art or photography department.

4 Recent Alumnus

Academic Experience: The teachers are great and the students in the program are nice, but the materials fees are outrageous on top of your unit prices. No books are really required and the work load is fairly easy depending on your teacher. The lab that goes with each class is tedious and annoying though.

3 Recent Alumnus

Campus Resources: Recources Here Are Okay. The buildings at the school look old although some rooms of the campus have new technology, such as computers, projectors, things of that matter. They just put in grass all over the campus which make it look alive and refreshing, and there's even a new theater being built.
