Health & Safety: Theft has been a problem, but as long as you lock your doors and don't leave valuables unattended you will be okay. Also, if you have a bike, pay the extra to get a U-lock rather than a chain or cable.

2 College Senior

Majors: Our public affairs, business, and international relations type majors are the strongest. Our weakest are math and science.

3 College Senior

Facilities: AU is trying hard to improve the facilities on campus. They just finished building a new dorm and a new School of International Service. They are currently working on more dorms and a new law school building. They have also added "green roofs" to two existing buildings.

2 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Enforcement of drug policy is pretty tight and harsh.

Majors: I have not taken part in an internship yet but I feel it will be easy to find on.

3 College Sophomore

Majors: I am very pleased with my program and I would definitely do it again. My career goals are to become a TV producer and my concerns with finding a job include finding a specific niche.

Computers: Access to computers is very good, but the reliability of the school's WiFi is not very good and often cuts off.

3 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: There is not much crime on campus, at least not where I am or have been, but I always see campus security.

3 College Sophomore

Overall Experience: I think I have not given the school a real chance in regard to participating in activities outside of class or academics within my field of study, which I think is essential in order to get a better understanding of my future plan and to fully enjoy college life.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: In the School of Communication, everyone must double major or have a minor, which I think is a great feature and the school works hard to make sure this requirement is plausible for all.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: The professors at AU are all wonderful and have immense knowledge and experience in what they teach. From my experience, all are eager to assist the student in any way they can as well.

Local Atmosphere: Although the events on campus tend to be limited to specific groups or types of people, there is always something for everyone of any interest not far from campus like festivals of all types, different places to simply explore and much more.

2 College Sophomore

Facilities: The facilities on campus do not really match, as some buildings are old and look old while others are brand new and have more modern feel to them. I think in the future, it would be best to put more effort into making the buildings look more alike, at least on the outside.

Transportation: The shuttle system set up at AU is wonderful and gives students a very easy and fast way to get to public transportation in Tenleytown.

Off-Campus Dining: It's Washington, DC. You can find anything that you want to eat in the nation's capital. It might be a little pricey but it's usually great food.

Local Atmosphere: In the city, there is quite a bit to do! Around the "town" closes to AU there is some to do, mostly restaurants, apartments, and grocery stores.

Majors: I am an anthropology major and they have a great range of courses available. I have had mostly good professors thus far with a few questionable ones.

Drug Safety: I do not usually drink and have never felt peer pressure to do so. Smoking is popular, but I have never felt peer pressure there either.

Health & Safety: I have never felt unsafe on campus. Public safety is always around. Dorms are safe too. Although campus is in a big city, American University does a great job keeping the campus safe.

Guys & Girls: We have a very diverse student body, so there is a group out there for everyone and if there isn't its really easy to create an organization.

Off-Campus Housing: it all depends on where you end up living. The berks, apartments, are very dorm style, but you can also rent a house with a group of friends its very flexible. And sometimes you can exchange housing for childcare and tutoring.

Campus Strictness: everything is pretty fair, just don't be stupid.

4 College Sophomore

Weather: so far no complaints just make sure you dress for the appropriate weather.

Parking: They don't offer reasonable parking for students. I understand there are lots of commuters but it's still frustrating.

3 College Freshman

Guys & Girls: I would say that when it comes to looks the school is very underrated. Of course, not everyone looks like an Abercrombie model but if you look hard enough due to the diverse student body, you can find pretty much anything you like. From the typical frat boy to an exotic looking lad. When it comes to girls, if you open up your eyes, you can easily find a cute girl here and there.

Many students agree that there is something for everyone at AU, and they are rarely ever bored. Though the school’s population is relatively small and has fewer parties compared to state schools, many claim that it is worth it to be in D.C. and the surrounding area.

Upon arrival at AU, the adjustment period can be tough for people not accustomed to an urban setting. However, making friends is quite easy, and even the shyest students will be able to integrate themselves into the small, tight-knit AU community. For the most part, students have no problem expressing themselves socially or academically. It seems that a “work hard, play hard” philosophy best suits the students at American University.
