Health & Safety: Little oasis in the middle of Milwaukee – Not once have I ever not felt safe on campus at Alverno. It's like this little oasis in the middle of Milwaukee.

Health & Safety: I feel very safe here – I feel very safe here, security is active and we have a strong system to keep strangers outside the dorms. I took a self-defense class here at Alverno a few semesters ago, so most of my secure feelings stem from knowing that I can defend myself.

4 Niche User

Health & Safety: Security is definitely present and supportive – Security is definitely present and supportive on campus. It's nice to get updates on security alerts during the rare times that there are problems. Things are not swept under the rug.

Health & Safety: Security is great on campus – Security is great on campus. They are very sociable and visible throughout campus. It is a small campus so most everyone knows how to get a hold of them. There are emergency light/phones in our parking structure and around campus. If security needs to respond to non-emergency situations, they usually won't be very quick, but they are very available in emergency situations, whether it is a personal or medical emergency.

Health & Safety: Alverno is a very safe environment and I always feel comfortable walking around on campus, even at night. Most of the security are friendly and open to questions.

5 Niche User

Health & Safety: There has not been a single day or night where I did not feel safe here at Alverno. There are security guards walking around campus 24/7. There are also Community Advisors (CAs) that are on duty every night with a walkie talkie to have one on one access to the security guards if there was anything wrong.

Local Atmosphere: Milwaukee can't compare to Chicago – I am originally from Chicago, so Milwaukee seems rather small and drab by comparison. I am very politically active and Milwaukee has proven to be a very good size for activism. There are many other universities in Milwaukee, but there isn't any noticeable camaraderie between them and Alverno. There are seedy bars and dangerous neighborhoods just like in any other city and there are some things to do, but I'm homesick most of the time.

3 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Milwaukee scares me – I don't live in Milwaukee and therefore don't spend much time in the area. To be honest, Milwaukee scares me. Not because it's unsafe or scary, but because I'm a small town girl who grew up in the state of Oregon. I live in West Bend and commute so I'm not familiar with most of the area.

Local Atmosphere: Lots of great places in Milwaukee, but be safe – I live in Milwaukee and there are tons of great places and adventures to take. I would
suggest to anyone not familiar with Milwaukee to stay away from the deep North and South side and also, do not travel alone to the downtown area, especially at night.

Local Atmosphere: Lots of things to do nearby – Our college is located on the Southside of Milwaukee which is known to be for the most part a quiet area. We are not sectioned off away from everything which is nice because again, it helps bring a home like feeling. In Milwaukee there are other colleges around but it does not feel like a constant competition, in fact, it is actually nice because we can go visit the other campuses and watch their sporting events. Another nice thing about our location and the other colleges being around is that it allows us to be near males because going to a women's college is nice but I like to have the company of males at times. So if you would like to attend Alverno College I would definitely suggest you try out some of the sporting events of not only Alverno but the other colleges in town and also if you are not a sports person there are many other things like parties at other schools as well as the domes or museums. We are lucky to live close to Southridge Mall, many movie theatres, and the 27th street strip is a great place for food.

Local Atmosphere: Small college in a large city – Alverno is wonderful because you can attend a small school but are still only minutes away from the large city. You have to be sure to tour Sprecher's Brewery. This small brewery offers unlimited fresh soda samples for only $1, and allows you to see how this famous root beer is made inside this micro-brewery. The Rave is also only 15 minutes away from Alverno, and hosts many famous bands. Most recently I attended Switchfoot and Hinder concerts.

Local Atmosphere: There are a lot of things to do in Milwaukee – There are a lot of things to do in Milwaukee; it's just that most of the things to do cost money. But the atmosphere of the city really depends on what part of the city you are in. It can be really quiet, or very busy.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: I really like Milwaukee – I really like Milwaukee. There are various museums to visit, a lively nightlife, and many other things to do, especially in the summer and warmer months. Other universities present are Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, MATC, and others. I don't think that there is anything that I would necessarily stay away from.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Everything is pretty close by – Alverno is located in a metropolitan city, but we are in the middle of a residential neighborhood. We are about five minutes from the lake, five minutes from downtown and there are stores within walking distance. We aren't extremely close to other universities, but they are only about a ten minute drive away and there are buses that go straight to them, like MSOE and Marquette. We have fun stuff to visit like Discovery World, the Art Museum and the Domes, which are only about 10 minutes away.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Milwaukee is a college town – Milwaukee is a college town with a variety of different universities and a downtown atmosphere like nothing I've ever experienced. I believe that Milwaukee is a beautiful community - although as in any big city you have to be careful.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: I've always loved Milwaukee – Since I'm from this area of Milwaukee, I might be a little biased, but I've always loved it. It's close enough to the suburbs that you don't have some of the problems that schools smack dab in the middle of cities have, and close enough to freeway access to get you pretty much anywhere you want to go pretty quickly - including UW-Milwaukee, and Marquette University, both of which are downtown and about fifteen minutes away.

4 Niche User

Academics: The teachers are an interesting bunch – The teachers are an interesting bunch. Being a smaller college, you can really get to know the professors in your major quite well, not only their teaching style but also as real people. What's really great is that if you find a topic of special interest, you can do an independent study with a professor, which allows you to tailor parts of your learning to your needs and interests.

4 Niche User

Academics: Open communication with instructors – The instructors at Alverno College are great for the most part. I love the one on one attention you get from the teachers at Alverno because it makes you feel like you are more than just a number or just another student. It is a very home like atmosphere throughout the entire college. I have never felt that I could not seek extra help from an instructor nor have I ever felt intimidated by an instructor.

4 Niche User

Academics: Approachable and welcoming teachers – The approachable and welcoming teachers are what led me to choose Alverno College over the five other colleges I toured. Upon arriving for my tour of Alverno, I was instantly invited to sit and eat lunch with a few of the philosophy professors, and within a half hour found out that we both grew up in Evanston and loved the Cubbies. This initial open communication led to wonderful relationships in and out of class, and allowed me to feel comfortable in the classrooms instantly.

5 Niche User

Academics: Phenomenal faculty – We have phenomenal faculty. Despite being a smaller school and thus having fewer faculty, we have well educated and student focused faculty. This is not like other institutions where the faculty are there for research opportunities and mange the pesky teaching responsibilities by delegating to teaching assistants. In addition, the faculty typically make time to assist students in personal projects and interests. This is particularly impressive when it comes to part time faculty.

5 Niche User

Academics: The teachers are absolutely amazing! The teachers are absolutely amazing! They know YOU for YOU and how you are as an individual. Not only do they make learning interesting, they make you WANT to learn and be the best that you can. They won't settle for anything less than your best. They care about what is going on in your personal life - your achievements and worries. To me, I believe that the teachers at Alverno are more than "just teachers"- they are wonderful role models and amazing people.

4 Niche User

Academics: Instructors are all unique and worldly – The instructors at Alverno are all unique and worldly. Many of the instructors I have had bring a lot of current events and are up on their information. They bring their personalities to the classroom so that the lectures aren't so boring.

5 Niche User

Academics: The professors are kind, understanding, and helpful – The professors at Alverno College happen to be some of the most kind, understanding and helpful individuals I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I have never had a question that couldn't be answered or an issue with an assignment that they weren't happy to help me figure out. I love that I can call my professors by their first names and they call me the same. I'm not just a number - I am an individual and I find that to be very beneficial towards my education.

3 Niche User

Academics: Professors range from really good, to horrific – They range from really good, to horrific. It really depends on the department, and how/why you're interacting with the teacher. Some teachers tend to be nicer towards students with whom they are more familiar, those students being in their own department, and teachers are definitely nicer and more understanding when you apply yourself.

5 Niche User

Academics: Teachers are basically amazing – The teachers are basically amazing. I know when I walk into each and every class that the only agenda my teachers have is to benefit my development as a student. I know so many of my teachers and they know me, there are relationships and connections being made, we are like an awesome super functioning community of learners.
