Computers: It's easier if you bring your own computer – If I was living on campus I would definitely bring my own computer or lap top just because sometimes it is nice to work alone or in your room. I did not bring my lap top my freshmen year and it was not horrible, but, there were times every once in awhile when the lab would be full in the dorms and it was either too late, I was too tired, or it was too cold for me to walk over to the computer center which closes at midnight. Once I brought my lap top my sophomore year things were nice because I worked whenever and wherever I wanted and I could save all my work to my flash drive and I would only have to use the computer lab for printing.

Computers: Don't use the computer labs during the lunch hour – The computer labs are mostly crowded during the lunch hour, so I would suggest that you use your time wisely and figure out what times best fit your schedule.

3 Niche User

Computers: The lab is only open until midnight – Usually the computer labs are only crowded around lunch. Otherwise, computers on campus are pretty available. The lab is only open until midnight, so you may need to bring your own computer if you are a night owl or procrastinator.

3 Niche User

Computers: Bring your own computer – I do recommend bringing your own computer. I brought my own, but it broke and I haven't had a chance to bring it to the technological staff to have it fixed (they do it for free). The computer lab in the dorms is small and gets very crowded. The main building has a large computer lab, but parts of it are used for classes and the section that's always open also crowds up.

3 Niche User

Computers: During lunch the main computer lab is usually crowded – During lunch the main computer lab is usually crowded, but with the library, computer labs, and Mac labs, there should usually be a spot open somewhere. Bringing your own computer would be helpful if you enjoy doing your homework/studying alone.

3 Niche User

Computers: The computer labs can get crowded – There are times throughout the day that the computer labs get crowded. I find that around lunchtime and early afternoon the labs are busy. I have never had any issues with being able to jump on a computer quickly. The nice thing about Alverno is the ability to jump on the wireless network if you bring your own computer. I like to bring my computer, find a nice quiet spot to sit and work on homework.

Health & Safety: I have NEVER felt unsafe at Alverno. Not by myself, late at night, or any other time. Maybe it's because there aren't boys crawling all over the place or maybe it's because everything is pretty well lit. However, I don't see much of the security team. It seems like they're more preoccupied by other "more serious" potential threats like catching the "smokers" than anything else. You never get a wave or a hello.

Health & Safety: I feel safe on campus – I feel safe on campus. I lived on campus in the dorms for 2 ½ years and I never feared my safety. We have the option of getting escorts when needed and also we have the blue light phones around campus which is a plus because sometimes it is not easy to grab your cell phone when nervous or scared.

4 Niche User

Health & Safety: I always feel safe on campus – I always feel safe on campus. Even though I feel safe I always take precautions when walking to my car at night or in the parking garage. Security guards are always walking around the campus throughout the day. Security guards are also available to walk you to your car, which I think is a great thing to take advantage of.

5 Niche User

Health & Safety: Security is always willing to help – The large amount of security allows me to feel completely at ease on campus. Campus security is always reachable via phone or radio if I ever have any questions or concerns. Also, phones are placed all around campus in case ever have an emergency or concern. Whether you want an escort to your car because it is dark outside, or you locked your keys in your room, security is always willing to help and will take care of any of your safety concerns.

Health & Safety: Little oasis in the middle of Milwaukee – Not once have I ever not felt safe on campus at Alverno. It's like this little oasis in the middle of Milwaukee.

4 Niche User

Health & Safety: I feel very safe here – I feel very safe here, security is active and we have a strong system to keep strangers outside the dorms. I took a self-defense class here at Alverno a few semesters ago, so most of my secure feelings stem from knowing that I can defend myself.

4 Niche User

Health & Safety: Security is definitely present and supportive – Security is definitely present and supportive on campus. It's nice to get updates on security alerts during the rare times that there are problems. Things are not swept under the rug.

4 Niche User

Health & Safety: Security is great on campus – Security is great on campus. They are very sociable and visible throughout campus. It is a small campus so most everyone knows how to get a hold of them. There are emergency light/phones in our parking structure and around campus. If security needs to respond to non-emergency situations, they usually won't be very quick, but they are very available in emergency situations, whether it is a personal or medical emergency.

4 Niche User

Health & Safety: Alverno is a very safe environment and I always feel comfortable walking around on campus, even at night. Most of the security are friendly and open to questions.

5 Niche User

Health & Safety: There has not been a single day or night where I did not feel safe here at Alverno. There are security guards walking around campus 24/7. There are also Community Advisors (CAs) that are on duty every night with a walkie talkie to have one on one access to the security guards if there was anything wrong.

Local Atmosphere: Milwaukee can't compare to Chicago – I am originally from Chicago, so Milwaukee seems rather small and drab by comparison. I am very politically active and Milwaukee has proven to be a very good size for activism. There are many other universities in Milwaukee, but there isn't any noticeable camaraderie between them and Alverno. There are seedy bars and dangerous neighborhoods just like in any other city and there are some things to do, but I'm homesick most of the time.

3 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Milwaukee scares me – I don't live in Milwaukee and therefore don't spend much time in the area. To be honest, Milwaukee scares me. Not because it's unsafe or scary, but because I'm a small town girl who grew up in the state of Oregon. I live in West Bend and commute so I'm not familiar with most of the area.

3 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Lots of great places in Milwaukee, but be safe – I live in Milwaukee and there are tons of great places and adventures to take. I would
suggest to anyone not familiar with Milwaukee to stay away from the deep North and South side and also, do not travel alone to the downtown area, especially at night.

Local Atmosphere: Lots of things to do nearby – Our college is located on the Southside of Milwaukee which is known to be for the most part a quiet area. We are not sectioned off away from everything which is nice because again, it helps bring a home like feeling. In Milwaukee there are other colleges around but it does not feel like a constant competition, in fact, it is actually nice because we can go visit the other campuses and watch their sporting events. Another nice thing about our location and the other colleges being around is that it allows us to be near males because going to a women's college is nice but I like to have the company of males at times. So if you would like to attend Alverno College I would definitely suggest you try out some of the sporting events of not only Alverno but the other colleges in town and also if you are not a sports person there are many other things like parties at other schools as well as the domes or museums. We are lucky to live close to Southridge Mall, many movie theatres, and the 27th street strip is a great place for food.

Local Atmosphere: Small college in a large city – Alverno is wonderful because you can attend a small school but are still only minutes away from the large city. You have to be sure to tour Sprecher's Brewery. This small brewery offers unlimited fresh soda samples for only $1, and allows you to see how this famous root beer is made inside this micro-brewery. The Rave is also only 15 minutes away from Alverno, and hosts many famous bands. Most recently I attended Switchfoot and Hinder concerts.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: There are a lot of things to do in Milwaukee – There are a lot of things to do in Milwaukee; it's just that most of the things to do cost money. But the atmosphere of the city really depends on what part of the city you are in. It can be really quiet, or very busy.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: I really like Milwaukee – I really like Milwaukee. There are various museums to visit, a lively nightlife, and many other things to do, especially in the summer and warmer months. Other universities present are Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, MATC, and others. I don't think that there is anything that I would necessarily stay away from.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Everything is pretty close by – Alverno is located in a metropolitan city, but we are in the middle of a residential neighborhood. We are about five minutes from the lake, five minutes from downtown and there are stores within walking distance. We aren't extremely close to other universities, but they are only about a ten minute drive away and there are buses that go straight to them, like MSOE and Marquette. We have fun stuff to visit like Discovery World, the Art Museum and the Domes, which are only about 10 minutes away.

4 Niche User

Local Atmosphere: Milwaukee is a college town – Milwaukee is a college town with a variety of different universities and a downtown atmosphere like nothing I've ever experienced. I believe that Milwaukee is a beautiful community - although as in any big city you have to be careful.

Most students who have made it through the majority of their years at Alverno say that they cannot imagine being anywhere else. In fact, many students who leave Alverno to go to other schools because of finances or because they didn't think Alverno was a good fit, often come back. Alverno is not just a school—it's a place that teaches women to think outside of the box and to understand themselves. It becomes a home for many people. Alverno graduates go on to become important women in their workplaces, communities, churches, and homes. The College offers students a unique opportunity to take a really good look at themselves and say, "Who am I?" and "Is this who I really want to be?"

Most people say that going to college is an investment in your future, but coming to Alverno is an investment in not only your future, but also your community's future. Almost all students who graduate from Alverno get a job within six months of graduation. Its graduates are competent, well-rounded, and have made a name both locally and internationally. At Alverno, students are pushed to analyze documents, literature, and one another. They are also encouraged to continuously self-assess and focus on their success.
