Nightlife: It's nice to go to parties at the various sport houses and fraternity houses, but the all-time gathering place is the Penny Bar. The Sports Garden, Chipper's (for wings), Otter's (for bands), and Applebee's happy hours are also great because you see most of the campus out.

Nightlife: The parties are pretty lame because of security, but okay for a small college.

Greek Life: Greek life is pretty prevalent. It is amusing, but we live in a free country. To each his own.

Niche User

Greek Life: Greek life is inescapable. A few of my friends have succumbed to it, and I swear it swallows their souls. Don't misunderstand me. I don't think the idea of Greek life is entirely bad, but I think it is often implemented in monopolizing ways. I hear Greek life participants complaining about their organizations just as much, if not more, than I hear them praising it.

Greek Life: Greek life at Allegheny is not like TV and popular culture peg it to be. It's relaxed and fun. About 25 to 30 percent of Alleghenians are in the Greek system. It's often said by the administration that those are the kids who do a lot, though. I generally don't see much of a conflict between Greek and non-Greek, and in fact, many times when a group of friends form, and one of the members joins Greek life, the group still continues to be friends. With the four sororities and five fraternities, there isn't a lot of choice as to where a person might go, but in each group there is a variety of people; and it is certainly encouraged that a person pledge, if they pledge, where they are most comfortable.

Niche User

Greek Life: Don't bother to pay all that money to make friends. There are so many groups on campus-you don't need Greek life.

Greek Life: I'm not personally involved in Greek life, but I guess it's pretty pervasive for a school this size.

Niche User

Greek Life: Greek life is awesome. If you want a good social life after freshman year, go Greek. But only choose an organization because you already have a lot of friends there. If you try to buy your friends, you will be miserable.

Greek Life: Greek life is big on campus, but it's not so big that you have to be involved. It's very easy to avoid Greek life all four years. But chances are, whether you like it or not, you're going to end up at a fraternity- or sorority-sponsored event, and you aren't going to hate it.

Niche User

Greek Life: It's popular, but there's never any pressure to go Greek or anything.

Niche User

Greek Life: Many people are involved in Greek life. Some fraternities and sororities are more exclusive than others. Generally, everyone hangs out with everyone else on campus, Greek or not. But, if you're not going Greek, you're not shut out of the social scene.

Niche User

Greek Life: It does not dominate the social scene, except when fraternities or sororities have events in the Campus Center and make a lot of noise, like running through Brooks Hall screaming chants.

Niche User

Greek Life: I think Greek life dominates the social scene at times. Especially at Wingfest. But once you find your own group, you can just ignore it.

Niche User

Greek Life: I would say no, Greek life does not dominate the social scene, because I didn't do it and some of my friends did, and I don't even realize they're Greek. There are plenty of Greek events, but there are still plenty of non-Greek events.

Niche User

Greek Life: Greek life doesn't dominate. It's there, but there are plenty of people who aren't Greek.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Something commonly heard from recent graduates is how much easier graduate programs were after the rigorous Allegheny courseload. Whether at grad school or at their first job out of college, Allegheny graduates have the skills to succeed in their fields. When considering their time at Allegheny, most students are very thankful for the education they received and all of the great people they got to know. There are so many different kinds of people and points of view that students are encouraged to do anything they truly want to do. Most people feel that they have really grown and changed as a result of the Allegheny experience—and in a good way.

There are students who have regrets or who feel they were in some way disappointed with their Allegheny education or experience. For one thing, Meadville does not provide the kinds of opportunities or the nightlife that a big-city university would. Succeeding at Allegheny is a lot of work and students looking for a party school will not find it here. It takes a lot of time and effort, and for some, it might not be worth it. But all that time and effort is meant to pay off, and for hard-working students, it does.
