Campus Dining: A Little Below Average – The food is here is alright. It's typical college food, with not too much variety. To be fair, they have come a long way since my freshman year and now offer vegetarian specials everyday. They also have a midweek special which is usually pretty good at Brooks (the main dining hall). Mckinley's, the points for food dining center, has pretty good food. However, the prices are pretty high. Around town there is a lot of fast food, and some pretty decent sub shops, pizza places, and a couple of good local restaurants. You might get bored with the options here by the end of semester, but for the first few months you will be fine.

Majors: Intership Possibilities – There are a lot of options for internships. We have a very strong alumni base to pull out options from. Our office for internships is very helpful with helping people try and find internships in their fields.

Overall Experience: Wonderfully Weird – I absolutely love this school! It is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. We are a school that is really focused on becoming more sustainable and greener as a community each and everyday. Our motto is "wonderfully weird" because everyone here is unique and the girls and boys are not the typical cliquey people. Everyone is friends with everyone and people are not judged for being different. The school focuses on academics a lot. However, our student motto is "study hard during the week, party harder on the weekend."

Campus Strictness: Punishments Aren't Too Bad – Usually RAs will not write you up for drinking or being drunk in the dorm rooms the first time or two per semester. And if you do get written up, you usually only have to do some community service and talk to a counselor.

Overall Experience: Overall, Allegheny College is decent but it's not for everyone. Allegheny College is located in Meadville which is a small town and if you are coming from a small town, its PERFECT! But for me, I'm coming from a large suburban area and it's been a challenge. But if you are looking for a quiet, small, somewhat isolated campus, Allegheny fits for you.

Here's a few other insider tips:
-It's easy to not spend any cash for a week.
-Walmart is the largest store in the area
-There is a large frat/sorority atmosphere here
-Parties start at 11 and end around 1. :(
-Allegheny's definition of diversity is 60 black students, 20 hispanic students and 20 asian students plus 5 exchange students out of 2200 students.
-There is a pre-law, pre-health and pre-education track
-There is always free stuff!
-Even though Meadville may seem boring, there are things to do in town (movies, food, bar)
- Allegheny's campus is much larger than it may seem...
-There is a sense of community.
-GFC is one of the best places on campus to get coffee.

Majors: Allegheny College offers a required Freshman Seminar (FS) to all incoming students whose purpose is to reinforce writing skills so that all students are writing at the college level. The professor of that class is the student's adviser for two years and changes later depending on the major you wish to pursue. All scheduling is done with the help of that adviser. If you have any questions or concerns, your adviser is there to help!

Transportation: The Allegheny College campus is small and all things are within walking distance. The residence hall furthest away from Campus Center (Ravine)is only far relatively speaking. The actual walk from Ravine to Campus Center feels like 7 minutes. The walk from Ravine to the building furthest from it on the opposite end of campus is less than a 15 minute walk.
A car is not necessary, but an asset if you'd like to get out of Meadville every now and then. Luckily, many students have cars and will willingly take you where you need to go if you ask.

Campus Housing: Campus Travel – Allegheny's campus is beautiful throughout the year and everything that I need is within walking distance. I have yet to venture out into the Meadville area because I haven't needed to, but the school provides free bus services that take students to shopping facilities like Walmart and Staples. Other than that, it's pretty difficult to travel outward unless you have a car, but many students on campus have cars and are willing to take you out if you ask.

Guys & Girls: some of them, not all, but some are extremely cocky!!!

Greek Life: Present on Campus, but Not Overbearing – I am a member of a sorority, and I am very happy to be in one. There are many stereotypes of sororities being catty towards each other, but that is not the case. Being in a sorority (or a fraternity) does not limit your circle of friends to just your brothers/sisters. It is also not necessary to join a greek organization to have a social life. Greek life is there on campus, but it is not a big deal if you do not participate.

Academics: Difficult, Personalized Education – The academics here at Allegheny are quite hard, especially compared to larger universities. However, the professors truly push you to reach your full potential. Allegheny is not a large research university, but because of this, there are so many opportunities for undergraduate research and teaching assistant jobs. This gives me experience to get an internship and eventually a job.

Drug Safety: Although drugs and alcohol are rather present no matter what college you attend, Allegheny is rather clean. Most of the students here are serious about their studies and they don't want to waste time with destructive choices like those.

5 College Freshman

Academics: Great Amount of Choices – At Allegheny the options are never ending. I have taken classes in theatre, religion, world politics, and more. The diversity in the courses I am taking really keeps me interested and I am allowed to explore all of my talents.

2 College Sophomore

Health & Safety: I have always felt safe on campus but this year (11-12), I've heard about a lot more date rape / drug rapes then last year. Campus in general doesn't feel as safe but at the same time... I'm not going to be running to buy a rape whistle.

Facilities: Small and Private – Allegheny college is a small liberal arts college emphasis on academic development. Students who study here maintain very close relationship with the faculty, and the professors are very helpful both for academic and non-academic.There are a lot of opportunities in allegheny. Like, the CPP (center for political participation) is a national recognized political research institution, which creates numerous opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing future career in politics.

Parking: Allegheny college is located in a small town, named meadville in PA. On-campus parking only cost 150 dollar/ per year, and you can alway find the parking pot.

Campus Housing: Freshman Dorms – I was living in a double-room with a student from NYC. Since all the residence are filled with freshman, the hygiene is not satisfied and hall echoed music every day. Obviously, it is not a place for studying and sleeping, but it is a fabulous place for party and social communication.

3 College Freshman

Off-Campus Dining: I don't usually eat off campus but I do pass by most of the restaurants on my way to Walmart or back home. I know of a McDonald's, Long John Silver, Five Guys, Pizza Hut, Hoss's, Cracker Barrel, Perkin's, Red Lobster, Grace's Asian food, Applebee's,a few other places that I do not remember the names of, and even the movie theatre if you love popcorn that much.

4 College Senior

Overall Experience: I have loved it since I decided to apply to it early decision and not apply anywhere else. The professors are brilliant, the material engaging, campus is beautiful, close to home for me, and the social life is a ton of fun.

3 College Senior

Diversity: Progressive School – There are a fair amount of minority students on campus. The great majority of the campus population is accepting of people with different sexual orientations as well. There have been incidents where this is the case but they are rare.

5 College Senior

Facilities: There is a campus center, athletics center that has dance studios, a full gym, pool, indoor track, and basketball court. There are also tennis courts. There is also a buffet style dining hall as well as a a-la-carte style dining area. Almost every major has a building or a doubled up building to accommodate it. The landscapers that work on the campus do an extremely nice job, the campus always looks great. There is even a wooded area right in the middle of campus with a nice old bridge.

1 College Sophomore

Diversity: School is 85% white, and its mostly kids from the greater pittsburgh area or nearby ohio and rural ny. they work hard to try and attract token colored students and people from far away but understandably they are few and far between.

3 College Sophomore

Campus Housing: No Off Campus for You – They are working hard to get rid of off campus housing. The dorms are small- but normal compared to other colleges. Unfortunately though theres no air conditioning and the buildings are also very old.

3 College Sophomore

Facilities: Greek life is 25% but theyre like social rejects- not what you think of of typical greek life. Girls are not attractive. The campus can be gorgeous since its in the middle of nowhere and its private ad they spend on landscaping. the winter is long and sucks and they dont clear the roads and havent cancelled class in 40 years. and theres often like a foot of snow on the road(yes road). The people are not diverse.

4 College Sophomore

Campus Strictness: Not Strict – Campus security is super lax about drinking and stuff, if you do get in trouble our disciplinarian is a 5 foot 4 chubby dude that doesnt do a whole lot. and in general they arent strict about much.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Something commonly heard from recent graduates is how much easier graduate programs were after the rigorous Allegheny courseload. Whether at grad school or at their first job out of college, Allegheny graduates have the skills to succeed in their fields. When considering their time at Allegheny, most students are very thankful for the education they received and all of the great people they got to know. There are so many different kinds of people and points of view that students are encouraged to do anything they truly want to do. Most people feel that they have really grown and changed as a result of the Allegheny experience—and in a good way.

There are students who have regrets or who feel they were in some way disappointed with their Allegheny education or experience. For one thing, Meadville does not provide the kinds of opportunities or the nightlife that a big-city university would. Succeeding at Allegheny is a lot of work and students looking for a party school will not find it here. It takes a lot of time and effort, and for some, it might not be worth it. But all that time and effort is meant to pay off, and for hard-working students, it does.
