Academics: Academics are the best part of this school. Classes are small so the teachers are accessible and you can ask questions. My teachers have been great and I am happy with my field. The school is quite overrated however, the academics are the best in the area but nothing compared to like Upitt. Also everyone's majors and needs take a backseat to the pre-med students- that kinda sucks.

Scholarships: The school is very expensive so they give quite a bit aid and schps. the fin aid office is kinda helpful. But at the end of the day it usually comes out to more than it would cost to go to a state school.

Overall Experience: You Only Go to College Once. Dont Go Here. Well its a school with some nice people and some nice teachers and some very progressive ideas. But the bad outweighs the good. It has bad weather, its in the middle of nowhere, the nightlife is garbage, it is nowhere close to a college town, the food is limited and mediocre, and its very whitewashed and homogenous. and its mostly kids from relatively close by- the out of state statistic is because it is 30 miles from ohio and 40 miles from new york. idk some people like it, visit and see if you do.

4 College Sophomore

Computers: Theres decent speed wifi on campus, and the library usually has plenty of open pcs and macs. BUT THE LIBRARY IS NOT OPEN 24 HOURS IT SUCKS.

1 College Sophomore

Weather: This is the worst thing about the college. WE get the lake effect so when its warm its literally raining about 75% of the time. And the winter is lonnnnng and brutal. It snow seriously 90% of the days and we didnt get nice weather till 2-3 weeks till the end of the year(but it still rained just didnt snow). Also they havent cancelled a class in 40 years although is nows in feet. But it really makes you appreciate a sunny day. At the beginning of the year when theres some sunny days everyone is outside doing something.

4 College Sophomore

Drug Safety: Campus security is super lax on drinkers and smokers, but theyre great when you need help. theyre very friendly let things slide. And in the school theres a decent balance between the drinkers and the straight edges and theres really no pressure.

1 College Sophomore

Campus Dining: Well there are only 2 options. Brooks or Mckins. Brooks is a buffet and the food is slop, but you can find decent things to eat. unfortunately its only open very limited hours during the day. Mckins has better taste but very few options and is very very overpriced. Mckins is open a lot more. Bu if your hungry at 12:30 on a monday night youre beat because nothing is open 24 hours.

Greek Life: Oh My – Our college is 25% greek because theres not much to do. the kids that join are the kids who cant make friends in their freshman year. so like at other schools the frats are selective and there are some standards but here its the opposite. frat guys are like overweight, odd, like socially out of touch kids whose egos are inflated when they join. the sororities however are ok- its just girls who are friendly but bored and only a bit airheaded. But our greek life is so overbearing and its a bit of a joke on them.

Nightlife: Our school is tiny and secluded so theres 2 options: go to a lame frat, pay a few bucks for a cup for access to maybe 2 kegs 3 if your lucky. And if youre really lucky there will be a small dance party where you can grind on a hideous allegheny girl OR if youre old enough or have a fake then go to the bars- slightly better option but its expensive and there are degenerate townies there. but a decent pressure free atmosphere

Majors: Poli Sci – My program is great, there are some very insightful professors and classes. But everyone on campus knows that their needs are secondary to the pre-med students.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: Classes are small so professors are super accessible. In my fields of poli sci and philosophy most of the professors are insightful and mind blowing. The classes you take are super flexible since its a liberal arts college. But one thing, its a highly overrated and hyped school(they have to advertise such to get kids to come), its the best in the area but its trash compared to like Upitt. You will meet some rather dull students.

Local Atmosphere: Meadville is in the middle of no where. The closest decent town/city is Erie and thats 40 minutes away. The winters are long and it rains often. Meadvillians as we call them are mostly degenerates, rednecks and old people. There are not many young people apart form the college. Its not a diverse area.

3 College Junior

Campus Strictness: Not That Bad – Security is pretty lax about drinking and drug use, as long as you're not causing trouble, no one will bother you. However, if you end up with a strict RA, getting caught with alcohol usually results with a write up and counseling, while drug use can be a call home.

4 College Junior

Academics: The geology department is small, but notable. You really know the professors on a personal level, and often get the opportunity to travel and research with them. The field work is crucial job prep, and the available internships provide great networking opportunities.

4 College Junior

Scholarships: Very Generous Achievement Based Aid – I was very surprised when I received my financial aid award letter from Allegheny. It was a lot of paperwork to fill out at first, but turned out to be well worth it in the end. Allegheny offers very generous scholarships based on high school academic achievement. Personally, it turned out to be quite a bit cheaper for me to attend Allgheny (a private liberal arts college) than it would have been to attend a state school with a much lower base tuition rate.

4 College Junior

Campus Dining: Decent Food but Overpriced – Allegheny has two dining options...an all you can eat buffet-style dining hall and another that is set up like a food court. In my opinion, both are overpriced, but the quality of food is better than most other college campuses I've visited.

Also, Allegheny has started an initiative to become more environmentally conscious. They have started using biodegradable silverware, cups, and plates, and are beginning to offer healthier foods as well as organic foods.

All in all, I'm satisfied with the campus dining options and everything they are doing to continually improve them. Student input and opinions are welcome and appreciated by the foodservice company.

4 College Junior

Academics: Demanding but Rewarding – I came to Allegheny specifically for their psychology and neuroscience programs. I have never had a class larger than 20 students and I have never had a professor without a PhD. The workload can be pretty demanding, but the professors are there to help you and will do their best to make sure you understand everything. Many even give out their home/cell phone numbers in case you have a question on weekends or outside normal class/office hours.

Another great thing about academics at Allegheny is the fact that every student is required to complete both a major AND a minor. In completely different subject areas. For example, it is not uncommon to meet someone who majors in chemistry and minors in music. Or physics and art. Or environmental science and philosophy. The "unusual combinations" are endless, and is honestly one of the things that attracted me to Allegheny in the first place.

3 College Sophomore

Nightlife: Just Friendly Visits – Its a bit dead at night because most stores close here at 7 and the only food spot open is McDonald. Here in Allegheny, great nights happen with great night with friends rather than a huge party even though there are a few good parties during the school year.

4 College Sophomore

Academics: Its What You Make of It. I'm planning on double majoring in Psychology and Communication arts. With that said,I have the flexibility of being able to combine the two majors to create my own unique major. Whether I double major or not, I am the one that chooses my own workload while still being able to be well-round; being that its a liberal arts private college where I have to take a class in the three divisions. Also there is a whole building devoted to connecting current students and alumni to plenty of diverse internships, volunteer opportunities and different companies. Allegheny tries it hardest to get their students to where they want to be while making sure we have our requirements and hold on to our unusual combinations.

3 College Sophomore

Scholarships: The financial aid of the school can be overwhelming, since you have to have certain grades to get financial aid.

3 College Sophomore

Guys & Girls: The students that are enrolled in the college are average looking. Most of the people are friendly and outgoing. Although the majority of the students are Caucasians, there is an average amount of diversity. I won't lie at times you can encounter some racism towards minorities or homosexuals, but their are students who fight along side the victims. Most of the students are into fraternities and sororities.

3 College Sophomore

Academics: The academics that the school offers are average. The best thing about the school is how close students can be to the professors. Students have the opportunity to ask the professor for help. Professors are always willing to help students. The workload is fair, it is nothing a student should not be prepared for. Students are able to create their own major, with the permission of the schools academic committee. The most popular majors are in the natural sciences.

4 College Junior

Facilities: Great Science Labs – Allegheny has really great state of the art labs, better than some institutes that I have done research in as a summer intern and have seen my parents work in. Steffee and Doane have great resources, and Carr is being renovated (after being renovated 10 years ago) to accommodate the ES department and to add new resources for ES and Physics.

4 College Senior

Scholarships: Get Your Aid Here – The school tends to help most people in need, but I can only speak from my own experience.

College Senior

Greek Life: It's a Click – If you're not Greek, well then, you're not Greek. It's not a big deal if you're not. The party scene is not dominated by Greek life.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Something commonly heard from recent graduates is how much easier graduate programs were after the rigorous Allegheny courseload. Whether at grad school or at their first job out of college, Allegheny graduates have the skills to succeed in their fields. When considering their time at Allegheny, most students are very thankful for the education they received and all of the great people they got to know. There are so many different kinds of people and points of view that students are encouraged to do anything they truly want to do. Most people feel that they have really grown and changed as a result of the Allegheny experience—and in a good way.

There are students who have regrets or who feel they were in some way disappointed with their Allegheny education or experience. For one thing, Meadville does not provide the kinds of opportunities or the nightlife that a big-city university would. Succeeding at Allegheny is a lot of work and students looking for a party school will not find it here. It takes a lot of time and effort, and for some, it might not be worth it. But all that time and effort is meant to pay off, and for hard-working students, it does.
