4 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: I enjoy it here because of the small town life- it reminds me of home

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The town of Alfred is very small, and unless you have a car, you won't really be able to go anywhere. The locals are really nice though, and you will definitely get to know them.

3 College Sophomore

Local Atmosphere: The local attitude towards students is mixed. Local business try to be nice because they know we are their bread and butter. It is hard to get a job in town because we are college students. Basically the college is a local attraction and it provides most of the cultural events/events in town. There really is't much to do in town on a regular basis. The safety is good.

1 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: SO SMALL. NOTHING TO DO. SO ALONE. it can get real depressing

1 College Freshman

Local Atmosphere: it's very boring, nothing to do and theres almost nothing in driving distance

Allegany County, one of the poorest counties in the nation, is a place of heartbreaking poverty and breathtaking beauty. A chain of intimate towns, many of which are trailer parks, dot the lush valleys of Western New York. Although the nearby cities of Buffalo and Rochester offer a hint of something urban, the general feeling is overwhelmingly rural. For a lot of "city slickers," the rolling hills and open sky are a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. It can certainly be too quiet at times.

The town of Alfred itself is comprised of professors, blue-collar families, and a ghetto of graduate students. Despite a tepid but ongoing rivalry with Alfred State College, which lies across the valley, the general feeling in town is calm and friendly.
