Local Atmosphere: Small Town – I'm from an urban area, so when I first came to Alfred I realized how laid back and homey it was. I enjoy the quiet atmosphere during the day and the student life at night.

2 College Junior

Academics: Art and Design – It's a lot of hard work and everything that you do is very subjective. It is hard sometimes because if the professor doesn't like how your art is, then you get a bad grade.

Overall it isn't so bad, but art is a hard field and I don't always feel prepared.

3 College Junior

Scholarships: I received a decent amount of financial aid, but most of my money came from academic scholarships. I would have wished to receive a little bit more. On the bright side a lot of people I know receive financial aid to live off campus which is a plus.

4 College Junior

Campus Strictness: You can get away with drinking in your room as long as you're not making noise. Depending on the RA you may just be told to do it elsewhere or you could be written up and get in trouble.

3 College Junior

Campus Housing: Campus Life – Living on campus is convenient, you're right on campus so you're close to campus and dining halls. All doubles or 4 person suites or apartments which is nice.

2 College Senior

Campus Strictness: Dumb Public Safety – Noise complaints are enforced heavily. Even if you and your friends stay in for the night instead of running amuck around campus, if your neighbors complain, public safety busts in your dorm. There have been a few times when there was no complaint, but they heard the word "Beer" and decided to stop in and see what was up. Violation of freedom of speech. college students say "beer" all the time, it doesn't mean they're consuming it at the point in conversation.

3 College Senior

Off-Campus Housing: The housing policy keeps changing, and it's not always for the better. They now require students to live on campus for 3 years, making the senior year very competitive for living off campus. Some juniors are able to live off campus but they're not notified until June/July, when all seniors have already secured their housing, making very few options for juniors. Many students also therefore do not have the option of looking at available places because they're not local. The on campus housing is in decent shape and are at decent locations, but its really difficult to host night events because publi safety is very strict about noise complaints. Off campus is much easier for late night parties.

3 College Senior

Campus Housing: The freshman dorms are a good location, pretty central on campus. the sophomores unites are nice because you live with 6 people, however the suites are in the very most upper left part of campus, it;s up a really steep hill and quite the hike. The ford street apartments for juniors and seniors are nicer than the suites, and in a better location with a full kitchen. i wish the rooms and closets were bigger though in the apartments, and that the fire alarms weren't so sensitive. We have at least 3 instances each month due to smoky bacon or something of the sort.

College Senior

Athletics: No Idea – I don't really know much about sports here because I'm not really involved with them. We do have a pretty good football team, but we're in a low district. Also we have an equestrian team, which is a draw, but I don't know about anything else. I guess there is a dojo in town. I got an Orange belt in Karate.

4 College Junior

Campus Strictness: Alfred is very safe, as well as the community around it. There have been a few occurrences in three years but nothing serious. The academics are a bit more strict and upheld more.

3 College Junior

Athletics: Sports Are Social – Sports other than football are pretty sparsely attended but they have taken the place of greek life on campus so most of the parties are put on by a team or group of people from a team. Everyone knows the athletes but not a whole lot of support.

5 College Junior

Academics: AU is a great community where you know most of your peers, your professors know you by name, and everyone is always looking out for each other.

5 College Sophomore

Majors: Theatre Major – Getting involved as a theatre major at Alfred University is one of the easiest things you can do. Alfred's theatre program is very accepting of new students, and encourage for anyone who is interested in getting involved. The professors are really accessible, and are extremely focused on you and what you are concentrated in.

4 College Sophomore

Scholarships: The financial aid office at Alfred is very organized and is very resourceful when it comes to giving out financial aid. I've had a LOT of success with financial aid, and I have been awarded with more and more each year!

5 College Sophomore

Academics: The professors at Alfred University are one of my favorite things about the campus. They really do an amazing job of being approachable and getting to know you. It really makes me feel respected and thought of when my professors take the time to know my name, where I'm from, and what I want to do with the time I spend at college. I feel I have a very close relationship with my professors, and I am never afraid to ask them questions or for advice!

3 College Senior

Overall Experience: Make Your Own Experience – Since Alfred is in such a small and excluded area, there isn't much to do. I believe you need to create your own combination of experiences. I played two sports, joined a bunch of clubs, got a job and made a lot of friends along the way.

3 College Freshman

Campus Strictness: Very Strict Dorm – A particular RA has a real problem with getting students in trouble for no reason. punishments are rediculous

1 College Senior

Transportation: Local Bus – There is a bus that runs to the closest town every now and then. There is also a bus that runs to NYC like once a day. No one really uses it and its costly

2 College Senior

Off-Campus Housing: The quality of most of the apartments/houses is absolutely horrible. There is one main landlord who is really cheap. Repairs never happen. It is a bit more cost efficient to live off campus.

4 Recent Alumnus

Diversity: I think Alfred is ahead of its time in terms of diversity and acceptance. Of course, there are many minds that are not on the same page, but there is quite a bit of open forums, activities and awareness of these types of issues.

Off-Campus Housing: There are a lot of choices! Alfred is small, so you're never really far from campus, and there are always friends in neighboring buildings

3 Recent Alumnus

Facilities: We have more academic buildings than necessary, but are greatly lacking in athletics, despite that 25% of our students are Intercollegiate athletes.

3 College Junior

Guys & Girls: Diverse, Athletic, Disproportionate – There is a very DIVERSE population of people at Alfred University from varying religions, races/ethnicities, sexualities, amd religious backgrounds. On top of that, people hold very different interests in several different extracurricular and social subjects--more or less there is someone for everyone! However, I've noticed there are a lot of ATHLETIC people from over 8 different sports. Also, the gender split seems to favor dudes over ladies, with what I would guess is about a 65%/35% split between guys and girls.

4 College Junior

Facilities: Accomodating, Prioritized, Innovative – I believe that the facilities at Alfred University strive to ACCOMODATE the basic needs of the students they serve. Students are always the PRIORITY of the staff in these facilities--never will someone tell a student "no" because a request would make their job more difficult or their day a little long. Instead, staff work with students to not only meet student needs and requests, but also to use existing facilities and resources in INNOVATIVE ways make Alfred University that much better!

4 College Junior

Facilities: Weird Is Cool – I'm an art student, and the reason I came here was for the glass department. It's amazing. Where else can you learn neon? It's easily my favorite class. I could go on forever about all the interesting classes I've taken, but that would get boring. Love Alfred, love the people, love the town. Hot Dog Day is the best thing ever.

Throughout your Alfred experience, you or someone close to you will utter the phrase, "I've got to get out of here." Students at AU make threats to transfer at least twice daily. Still, very few actually do. Many students stay for an extra year. Some stay for grad school, and a good portion of the staff is composed of AU alumni. Why? Students are spoiled! It's comfortable here, the financial aid is great, and many professors are also great mentors. Who would want to leave all that personal attention and a close-knit group of friends to just be a number at another university with a better football team?

AU students will disparage their time at AU with venom. When asked to appraise their experience honestly, however, they'll shrug their shoulders and admit that Alfred has helped them to learn and grow as individuals. While some individuals transfer, the majority of students that chose Alfred knows deep down that they couldn't be anywhere else.
