4 College Freshman

Facilities: The library is open late every day so you always have time to go there for quiet in order to study. The athletic centers are in need of an update but still usable for those looking to bulk up and increase their cardiovascular endurance. Campus always looks inviting; even in the dead of winter, I find myself looking around at the buildings and stopping in awe of my surroundings.

4 College Freshman

Facilities: You can always find something to do at Albion. All of the first year students live in the same residence hall so it makes getting to know people very easy. The surrounding area might not allow for the most exciting extracurricular activity but around campus, there are always meetings for clubs, carnivals, concerts, and events going on.

4 College Student

The facilities on campus range from functional to life-saving. The Stockwell-Mudd Library falls into the latter category. Offering an abundance of places to study, the library is the place to be most weeknights. There's a computer lab, plenty of laptops to check out, and an amazing archive of journal articles to sort through when researching. The staff is also very helpful and friendly. Other great and popular places to study include the various floors of the Kellogg Center, Albion's student union. On the first floor, there is the Living Room with couches, chairs, and coffee tables. The second floor is where the Eat Shop and the SEE Lounge are located. The third floor is mainly offices for student organizations, but on the fourth floor, there is a cushy loft with couches, tables, and a big-screen TV.

If you're looking to kill some time or hang out with friends outside of the dorms, then you may want to check out the Dow, Albion's athletic center. There are a lot of cardio and weight machines to work out on, as well as an inside track with tennis, racquetball, and basketball courts. If you're looking for something a little more low-key, the student-run coffeehouse has a comfortable atmosphere with board games, books, and entertaining shows and events later at night.

"Green" Initiatives
The College does a lot in terms of sustainability, with groups like the Sustainability Council, which is the go-to place for information on everything "green." Plus, students can complete academic requirements at the Center for Sustainability and the Environment (CSE) and graduate with a concentration in environmental science or environmental studies. Many public events based on the issue of sustainability also come to campus.
School Slang
  • 115: The One Fifteen Truck Stop, located at exit 115 on westbound I-94. A favorite late-night haunt of students after a long night.
  • ACIS: Albion College Information System. This is the way to access student account information online. You can view your grades, transcripts, and class schedule here.
  • Albion time: Most classes and events start at 10 after the hour. So, if you have a class that starts at noon, it really means you have to leave your room at noon to get to class on time.
  • Eat Shop: The Eat Shop is on the second floor of the Kellogg Center and offers a variety of fast foods for those late-night cravings.
  • KC: The Kellogg Center, Albion's equivalent to a student union
  • Living Room: Short for the Langbo Living Room, the lounge located on the first floor of the Kellogg Center. The Living Room is a popular spot for meetings, receptions, or just hanging out. You can tickle the ivories if you are a piano player, or enjoy the fireplace during the winter.
  • The Mae: The Mae Harrison Karro Residential Village, the newest College-built apartments that house upperclassmen only
  • Off-Campus Programs: The Center for International Education, the office that coordinates off-campus study opportunities both in the U.S. and abroad. The Center is located in the I-House.
  • The Pleiad: The school newspaper
  • Quad: Most of Albion's academic buildings surround the quad. The quad is the place to be when it's nice out for Frisbee and football matches, outdoor classes, speakers, and graduation each May.
  • 'Relli's: An easier way to refer to Cascarelli's, a bar and restaurant in downtown Albion.
  • Tiers: The six floors of shelves in the library where all the bound periodicals are located. Rumored to be haunted, the tiers are full of secluded and sometimes hidden areas that are ideal for studying, or if you just want some privacy.
  • WLBN: The student-run radio station that can be heard on Channel 6 on the College's cable TV system.
Traditions
  • Black Squirrels: These furry friends are a special feature of Albion and are in abundance around campus.
  • Briton Bash: This event takes place at the beginning of the fall semester. At the Briton Bash, all the clubs and organizations set up booths on the quad for students to sign up for new activities and enjoy a big picnic.
  • Day of Woden: Day of Woden takes place during the last week of classes second semester. The Dining Services move to the quad for a huge picnic and the Union Board plans activities.
  • Drive-In Movie: Every fall, the Union Board sponsors a drive-in movie where they bring in a giant screen and speakers, and set it up in the quad. Students bring blankets to snuggle up and enjoy the movie.
  • Festival of the Forks: The festival got its name from the "forks" of the Kalamazoo River's east and south branches, the site where Albion's first residents settled. At the festival, many countries and nationalities are recognized with their own booths featuring food and cultural items from that heritage.
  • The Io (pronounced "yo"): This is the abbreviation for "Io Triumphe," a yell written by the Class of 1900. Some phrases were taken from other college yells, some from a Greek play that had been presented on campus during that period, and others were borrowed from the poems of the Roman writer, Horace.
  • The Rock: The Rock, at the northeast corner of the quad, gets painted almost daily. Painting of the Rock usually is done in the dark of night, and it is a huge tradition.
Urban Legends
Pretty much every building is haunted.
Favorite Things To Do
Students usually spend time between classes either napping, eating at Baldwin, or hanging out with friends. Most Albion students like to hang out in each other's dorm rooms for fun. However, sometimes they will venture out to take in a sports game, a play, or an event brought in by the Union Board. The Dow is open during the day for those who like to work out, as is the Eat Shop.
