Name: Sofia Barrera
Grad Year: 2014
What made you choose your school? I was first interested in Agnes when I was a junior in high school. My literature teacher at the time, an Agnes alum, knew I was looking at colleges and mentioned the College to me in passing. It wasn't until after I applied and was being considered for scholarships in my senior year that I actually visited the campus. During the visit, I fell in love with the professors and students. The professors were so engaged in their subjects, and the students were intelligent, mature young women. After interacting with people on campus, I could only see myself at Agnes. There was no other place I felt I could truly grow into the intellectual, honorable woman I wanted to become.
What activity makes you happy? Walking. I love how walking is slow paced. It allows me to reflect on my day, and contemplate tomorrow.
What is your biggest pet peeve? The use of "like" as an adverb.
What is something about you that might surprise someone? I lift weights.
What is your favorite book, movie, or TV show and why? Being an English Lit major it's hard to pick a favorite book; however, if I'm going to choose one, it would probably be "Flowers for Algernon." I love this book because the story is told from the perspective of a mentally handicapped man in an impossible situation: he must overcome his "deviant" intellect and the baggage that goes along with it. This book taught me that perseverance, love and kindness know no boundaries.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why? I'd like to go to New York. I'm dying to know if the pizza is as good as everyone says it is.
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? Telekinesis would be pretty cool.
If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it? 1) Pay off student loans/ tuition
2) Pay off my parents' house
3) Buy my dad a new car
4) Pay my brother's tuition
5) Set up a trust fund for my other brother and sister
6) Buy myself a nice flat and a car.
What are your plans for after graduation? I plan on becoming either a middle school or high school English Literature/ Journalism teacher.
